Not yet! The fellow wants it if the knock does a Franco. Half the parts aren’t ordered yet, the rest are in transit.

Next weekend should see if the knock knocks off or if the knockers’ knocking rings a bell. |

What’s the collective wisdom on sleeving a gouge like this? Inlet cam variator.
That’s my oil leak. The knock was timing belt tensioner slapping about - belt was oil soaked and elongated. |

Thread locker like loctite 243 around the end of the gear, will fill up that gouge as the sleeve goes over it.

They tried filling a gouge, then later sleeving it on one of my Trader's rear main, didn't work.

After wiping down the sprockets, this one has a “rattle of death” when shaken, so I think it’s burgered anyway.

Has anyone here, the Holden part numbers for Cruze F18D4 cam sprockets, please?
The GM part numbers of 55567048, 55567049 aren’t recognised by Suttons’ web store. |

Trader's (Perkins) have high crankcase pressure and why they could easily push oil past dodgy seal fixes, probably why they were still vented to atmosphere right up to the late 90's on these trucks.

Suttons were quick to respond; $640 up front please.
I found a discrepancy in the online part numbers for inlet sprockets, mine (faulty one) is actually 55568386. That’s what is being quoted by Suttons. The other number might run with a different PCM or strategy. All exhaust sprockets share the same part number. |

Seeing its a Flip car is it worth taking $640 off the profit when a $135 set will do the same job
![]() I have found most suppliers have 2 part numbers for that same sprocket, 55567048 55568386 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/18694977...EaAk_bEALw_wcB Last edited by prktkljokr; 03-03-2025 at 12:09 PM. |

There’s a Korean workshop three doors down with a cooked Ashtray, think the same motor. Can’t see overheating killing the variators. He’ll likely be cheap.

I was wrong about the Astra, it’s a different donk.
Seems the inlet sprocket changed in 2013 with the older type being the US part number, which is what most of the Chinese-in-Australia sellers are offering. One buyer said in their feedback it wasn’t compatible with their JH Cruze. Wreckers want to sell me a whole head, nobody is parting out a damaged motor more specifically. |

It’s a combination of Australia Tax and my impatience, I don’t want the car on three legs in my driveway for eons while I wait for a local part of unknown durability at the right price. One backyard wrecker in Campbelltown is yet to get back to me.
$640.35 from Sutton’s, is not the right price. Tasca Parts (probably comparable with the parts side of the Adelaide Group) will sell me a genuine one for AUD295 delivered this week by courier, or I can buy surplus stock off a US Fleabayer for about AUD220 delivered in a fortnight or so. That’s the option I’m leaning towards; I can detail up the rest while waiting. |

I see you have a part ordered already, but have you got an imlachs wreckers around or the like. I have seen engines stripped and still in the cars.

Unfortunately, no self serve wreckers near Sydney any more, it’s a rolling inconvenience.

Only taken a bit over three weeks, but a new variator sprocket is due to arrive today. Hope to have this car on the road, knock-free, by the weekend.

Amusement.
Original (failed) variator hub: Dorman-boxed new part: So the Dorman part 918-777 is a repackaged genuine GM (Chinese made) 55568386 part. Irritation is deserved for the convoluted delivery via Fleabay’s “Expedited International Shipping” (EIS) which saw it sit in Australia for twelve days between arrival and delivery. This fiasco cost around $190 bought and delivered. I could buy another one from RockAuto and have it delivered next Monday for $120 inclusive. Another lesson learned. Next hurdle is to buy and butcher a 15/16” open-ender (or combination spanner) for service as a cam counterhold tool. It’s timed up, but the angle torque setting is too great for the cam indexing plate to hold by itself. |

Back together and driving. Initially had a timing mismatch fault code of P0016.
Swarf from (I believe) variator failure, had heavily blocked the intake cam solenoid. It was removed, dismantled, cleaned out - the fine screens disintegrated - and refitted after briefly cranking the engine to flush out extra swarf so much as practicable (oil everywhere, just after I’d degreased it all!). Fault code now gone. I think the solenoids are on the discharge side of the variator hubs (hence the swarf) and when the solenoid was jammed from debris it caused a mismatch of timing signals. Ominously there was also a little swarf on the exhaust cam side. I think also the transmission is not 100% - it’s a bit iffy but no stored codes - going to try a full drop/fill with attention to the oil level. If anyone has experience with the 6T30 or 6T40 boxes re oil level, I’m interested to hear your thoughts. |
