Parts of the state are in a bad way, water wise, especially the agricultural /farming industry. Yes, it's the driest state of the driest continent but it doesn't make the struggle any less real for some people. Many not on town water are having to buy water in and there is a shortage at the moment. Hopefully it's a wet winter.

we had enough to wet the windscreen, butt all else though, farmers are really doing it tough.. Last years seeding was successful due to moisture in ground from '23. This year theres nothing in reserve

In Adelaide, we need 2-3 days of consistent rain. Roughly 10-15mm a day would be nice. That rain the other day was much needed but no where near enough to stem the drought at the moment.
In Mt Bold Reservoir they have closed public access due to potential bushfire risk in that area. Its been a long time since its been that low too. Same with Myponga Reservoir, lowest point for quite a while. Desal plant is pumping away at the moment which is fine to get us out of trouble, but you can taste the water is not the same as rain water. Its got a very distinctive chemical flavor to it even through our filtration system.

I’m not a total doomsayer but the lack of water for growing stuff, the lack of bees for pollination, the enthusiasm for opening our shores to so many newbies - it just doesn’t add up. I feel we’re living on the ragged edge of “sustainability credit” as granted us by the earth itself.

Catastrophic loss of pollinators is not a drought event, it’s a further problem. Not just locally, beekeepers in the US are being motivated into taking their colonies where the short term returns are greater (like Californian orchards) but the bees are dying faster than they can be replenished for meeting commercial needs.
Further to that, it’s (obviously) consequentially stopping other areas from having their crops pollinated. “Robbing Peter to pay Paul” comes to mind. So if we assume that rainfall rates will eventually swing around, we’ve got two more problems - the relentless conversion of arable land into low density housing meantime, and the loss of pollinators to set stone, citrus and pome fruit crops. It’s like the dashcammers who could avoid an accident but don’t. People are wilfully and/or ignorantly disconnecting from awareness about how thin we’re spreading our options. Like many here, I haven’t forgotten past droughts; farmers shooting their flocks, then turning the gun on themselves out of despair. I’ve seen dead, stinking sheep shorn because the need for a few dollars in wool outweighs the repulsion. Yet so many people seem to think everything is like a suburban water tap - you can rely on it to be there when needed - zero depth of insight. Last edited by Citroënbender; 23-03-2025 at 12:31 PM. |

Drawing attention to the importance of the ecosystem is also lacking. Mostly it centres around climate change rather than how things all work together. The importance of bees is a prime example. From a personal standpoint this was only brought to my attention a few years ago thanks to a campaign by F1 driver Sebastian vettel.

I'm calling it, Autumn is here now! Which is sheer joy to my senses.
I can always smell the change of season, and in Autumn's cases, it coincides with the maturation of my neighbors weed crop. This has a very particular heady aroma that tends to carry quite a distance. I remember last year on the way home from work and entering my street with the window down, I could smell it straight away, and that's despite him being to the back corner of my house. Maybe I should ask him for a supply in exchange for my discretion, you know for chronic pain management and all?

I’m enjoying the cooler weather as well.
Re the tomato plants next door, it might be worth a trial with your GP if they’ll get on board. I can’t see you indulging idly, so it’s not like you’re taking the mickey. I tried it almost 35 years ago, didn’t like the low mood and irritation a few days after the benefits wore off. |
