All we need to hear now is that Ford are exporting the Falcon and Territory to the USA. This news also cements Ford's position in Australia.

Territory will not likely go to the US whilst they have Escape, Freestyle, Explorer, etc.

I wonder if Johnny Howard is prepared to pay for my dodgy BA XR8 driveline clunk? The really interesting aspect of this story is that I'd say that the Feds have become concerned about the possible closure of Ford manufacturing in Oz due to the woes of Ford in the US. This move by Howard is very cunning and is a most welcome show of support for australian industry. I have heard a rumour that there has even been some lobbying in Washington by our govt to ensure that Fords US rationalisation does not impact on Australia. From an international political perspective the yanks owe us a few favours given the support Australia has given their controversial involvement in Iraq.
This is great news long live the Falcon. |

50mil upfront is a lot better than 500mil down the road, such has been paid to Mitsu to keep alive (yet they still suffer...)

Dare I say a replacement for the Crown vic is in the works? Would justify tooling for a new fairlane.

Here are some pictures of the freestyle being sold here right now: I was going to post up pictures of a territory too, but I'm sure you guys know what they look like considering you probably see them everyday. I think it was a terrible waste that ford spent all the R&D on that freestyle when the territory is almost exactly the same and had already been developed. They could have saved a bundle in R&D.

What I imagine they would do though is rebade the Territory and changed the styling cues a little, and sell the same car in the US as a different model.
What I could see happening from this though, is an Australian designed car, built in korea, sold in America.

They could replace the freestyle with the territory when the next re-design is due, granted it would not be for another couple of years, but ford aus will still need to get the infrastructure to handle the extra demand that would be placed on them If this goes ahead

Territory market is more than usa.
China has stated "me wanty now". Europe would also be dam interested in the territory as its a sensible 4wd compared to the US stuff. This is big news. Ford can target specific high profit export markets. USA would be last on that list. UAE exports, European exports, some other niche markets. Could save the LWB cars. If Ford OZ gets UAE market, Fairlane may live, and boy, theres money to be made in that. |

Theres no money in the USA. Only volume. And Ford OZ is streched a bit for volume as is. Plus they have plants in the USA doing nothing.
Middle east is where there is plenty of money for SWB and LWB falcons. They pay good money, volume is swift and constant, and its a profitable business. That market alone would be worth another 20,000+ oz fords most of which would be LWB (the bigger the better). To make a LHD falcon they may have to mirror the current falcon head to provide space. This would be excellent because its simple and it would allow something very special. Or they could use a 3.5 V6. Say hello to a V12 Falcon avalible in capacities from 6.0L to 8.0L. All you would need is a unique block and crankshaft, which are realitively easy to make. All I6 improvements could directly carry onto the V12. The 6.0L would be a short stroke design suitable for high revs, also sitting low in the engine bay. Jaguar is keen to source a V12 for its flagship models. The aston one may not be suitable because of high costs, and peaky delivery with limited development. They may choose the 3.5L V6 due to engine production volume allowing greater volume out of broadmeadows. Boring. I say make the mirror head, export the I6 and make a V12 varient. |

Interesting read about the 'all new' falcon and territory. Does this mean that Ford are releasing an all new falcon and territory in late 2007/08 or are going to have a major update on the BF model, much the same as VT to VY.
I was under the impression that an all new falcon and terri was due then, but reading this gives me the feeling that atm we are just going to receive and updated BF model in 07/08 and an all new model in 2012ish???? any thoughts... |

Brand new model, code-named Orion, or E8. Remember that the BA is based on the AU, which is 10 years old in 2008, so parts are going to need a refresh. I will hazard a guess, and say that this time next year, we will start seeing Orion Mules on the road, like we do the VE. If Ford can pull the Orion off, Ford may well have another 20-30 years in Australia.
