Hey,
Did vinyl roofs come standard on Mk2 Escort Ghia's? How do you remove the vinyl? And is there a way of telling if there is rust underneath it, without removing the vinyl? Cheers, Aussie_Escort |

not sure about removing it.
but i think you can see the rust under it cos the rust bubbles up. is there anyway to water proof it? i wanna respray mine as well..

James, not sure bout waterproofing the vinyl but it's pretty expensive to do a respray.

With the vinyl roofs, is it primed metal underneath or is it painted like the rest of the car?

I removed the vinyl roof from my old TE Cortina and it was painted the same as the rest of the car. The roof was rust free so it was just a case of ripping it off then rubbing the hardened glue from the roof with a sander. It was then taken to the spray booth for a full roof respray. The end result was 100 times better that the terrible old vinyl rubbish.

revcore - So there were no problems with removing the vinyl? Stupid question I know but is your roof straight? I've heard that the effort in getting the glue of the roof can cause it to buckle and it’s a pain getting it straight again?

to remove it you need to use something to soften the glue as you pull it
back.prep solvent would do but Tolulene would be better. one word with tolulene is wear a respirator and use it outdoors,as it is carsnogenic. to water proof, use some vinyl protector(non silicon base). armoral is a spray painters worst nightmare |
