Here's an update. I called the rta and asked about the rego of this car getting the fine. It belongs to a Fairlane I owned 7 years ago that I stripped the engine, trans and good bits out of and then dumped at the local tip. I'm sure the plates were off it when I dumped it, but apparently they are still out there. Anyhow I called the sdro and pointed this out and it was "well well thats a mistake isn't it" and theyr'e going to sort something out and "send another letter".
I still had the issue of the plates causing me trouble so I needed to dispose of them out of my name. The rta say, "we will need the vin number!",and I think "the thing is 30 feet under, how do I get the vin?" Then I remembered the engine and chassis vin's on Fords are the same, so I dug up my 302 out of the shed, and hey presto one vin number! I disposed of the plates and hopefully I'm out of the poo now!

if you get out of the ticket I'd be then expecting a fine for not submitting the plates to the dot when you got rid of the car.. hopefully you have some luck and they dont fine you for it.. are these plates on a car somewhere being used by someone? how did the parking ticket come about with them? you might still have some explaining to do.. any way glad your sorting it out..

Make sure you write to them stating it is not your rego, and you were at work at the time, attach proof (photocopied docs) maybe a letter from your boss signed by a JP, if possible. It is very important it is in writing and not verbal so you have a record of what you have done (obviously keep a copy of the letter you send). First letter does not need to be threatening at all. I did this and recieved a phone call about 3 weeks later from a manager at the revenue office apologising. Second letter would have threatened legal action and a claim for compensation.

Same thing happened to a mate. He got a parking ticket in Sydney. Only problem is that we were about 300k's south at the time the ticket was written. Lucky for him one of his mates who is a Justice of the Peice was also there with him at his house that day. So when the ticket arrived, he wrote a letter to the department telling them it wasn't him and he had a supporting letter from his mate.

Anyway, he showed us the ticket (was a copy of the infringement), and looks like the guy who got the ticket, because the plate was wrong that was on the ticket he just just ignored it. When they issued a final notice, it came to my mate. Funny thing was, the colour of the car the same, as was the make and model of the car. Being 1 digit out, looks like they both bought the cars from same dealership, and they were sold same time and the dealership registered the cars at the same time. The last character on the plate was different by 1.

Anyway, he got off.

So write a letter and get someone to verify it

i was constantly getting toll notices sent to me just after i sold my ford ea. the guy had bought my old ea, had the disposal paperwork made out yet the new owner failed to also register the vehicle and was happily driving (toll joyrides) around unregistered with my old plates that had been lodged disposed of with the rta. all i had to do was, on the back of the toll notice fill out the stat declaration stating i didn't own the car anymore and a copy of the sale document of the vehicle & a copy of the rta disposal notice which was faxed to the toll company and i never heard from them ever again.
