Default AU series 1 engine

Can anyone confirm that the series 1 AU engine had a steel head gasket like the AU 2, and didn't have the headgasket issues that E-series had?

Thanks

Confirmed. The AU1, 2 and 3 I6's had no documented differences of any kind.

i was told by the local ford dealer the S1 had the old head gasket from the factory (a few of the last S1 had the new steel one though)but the new one is now listed as a replacement. the S2 got the steel one from factory and this solved the head dramas

I have a Nov 1998 AU1.. full serivce history and purchased second hand from New Oak Ford. Its never had the head off as far as anyone can tell. It has the steel gasket. I've also looked into the engine specs (specifically the VCT) from series 1 through to series 3 in detail and there is no change documented by Ford at all.

Strangely though there appears to have been a running change to the VCT head itself on the series 2 cars that changed an apparent issue with compression being slightly down on the original engines. It didnt include a change in the gaskets though. The VCT engine was also fitted at the assembly line at Broadmeadows and not at the Tickford (FPV) factory so it tells me that the metal gasket was at the assembly line level no later than Nov 98 (first AU's were about Sept). I'd say any fitted with an Eseries gasket would be the exception rather than the rule.

You wont find an AU that doesnt have a steel gasket, not from factory anyway. I think the Hybrid EL's got them too didnt they?

It would have come out of a series 2 but all the engine parts are identical in series 1, 2 and 3. It could have come out of any of them and been no different. The main thing is that it came out of a low km car. At 130,000kms its still a very fresh engine.

the series one coilpack is different series one part No F5LY 12029 A series 2/3 part No AU2 12029 A which is why you need different leads

yep, this is true. I was referring more to the actual engine itself though as the coil pack could be changed to any of the series setups if required.
If its accessories etc specific then the series 1 also had differences in the oil pressure sender unit (if it had one on the dash) and temp gauge sender units I believe. There may have also been minor differences in the A/C and alternator units.. I'm not exactly sure on that though.

well this engine has no oil leaks (apart from a seeping from around the timing case..)

Very clean, no marks/stains/etc.

I'm not gunna need parts like coil pack, BBM, Loom, A/C compressor, Tensioner.. Are these parts worth more than standard e-series parts? I just did a serpentine conversion on my car, and it cost a packet.. wish i hadn't now.

Generally AU I6 engine component parts are similar in price to E Series part. Pretty cheap overall.

Another quick question..

Will the AU Coil pack leads work with my Dizzy from the ED engine?
