W A registration laws?

Hi guys i have a bloke from W.A interested in buying my ute but he seems to think if he picked it up and drove it back as soon as he hits the border it goes unregitered!
Does anyone know about this i cant seem to find there website.

no you have time to change over in all states imagine driving there for a holiday and they called your car unregitered the minute you crossed the border. what you can't do is keep a car registered in a different state

You have 3 months to re rego it in wa, but being sold, it'd be less due to the transfer fee time

Here is an excerpt from the WA Licencing Service referring to registering vehicles, from other states, in WA. Interesting note there about buying a vehicle in WA that is registered in another state..

Licensing an interstate or overseas vehicle;

If you bring a vehicle from overseas you must take out Western Australian vehicle licence immediately. You will be required to present your vehicle at a examination centre along with your current registration papers and plates from the place of issue. You will require a temporary permit to drive the vehicle.

If you are bringing a vehicle to WA from another State or Territory, you are required to transfer your interstate vehicle registration within 3 months of becoming a permanent resident of Western Australian, to do this you must provide documentary proof of your identity (original documents only).

Your vehicle needs to be examined

If you purchase a vehicle in Western Australia registered in another state the registration is invalid and you will need a temporary permit to drive the vehicle.

You will be required to present your vehicle for examination at any examination centre along with the current registration papers and plates from the state of issue.

Your vehicle will need to be fitted with a government approved immobiliser in order for it to pass the required vehicle examination and so be licensed in Western Australia. Please see the immobilisers section for more information.

Once the vehicle has successfully passed the examination you will need to present proof of ownership (e.g.. current registration papers) together with the number plates from the state of issue and the examination certificate to a Customer Service Officer to allow the vehicle to be registered with Western Australian number plates.

this is if your buying the car in WA thats registered from the east (if the car was brought here for sale)
but yes if he buys it over there and then brings it over he gets 3 months

btw, that's unless it comes from the factory with one, so technically all falcons from eb2 onwards with smartlock will pass straight away, because it is a factory fitted immobiliser

So you got to fit an immobiliser to models without it?

wow, what if the car is like an XK Falcon, does it still need an imobiliser-can you even fit one to those type of cars

that's right, yes you can fit one to an xk, you can get really cheap ones that you have to put a sensor in the window and move a transponder thing near it....other ones are like one of those big headphone plugs that you plug into a socket in the dash....the list in endless, i had to put one in my ea when i first moved here, lol, the thing only cost something like $20 and i put it in myself, passed rego

Cars more than 25 years old do NOT need to have an aproved alarm system here in WA
My XB does not have an alarm and passed with no problem .

yes he is Jeff, he will just need to transfer it when he gets there but he has time to do that.

I have looked into buying cars registered in other states and bringing them back into WA. I found the info on the website (as above) a bit confusing and so it was! When I actually called and spoke to DPI Licencing about the exercise, I was told that the registration is invalid and I must get a permit to drive it, take it for an inspection and get WA registration as soon as I bring it into WA as I am a WA resident.

If someone moves from another state to WA, thats the only circumstance under which they have 3 months to get WA registration.

Thats my understanding and probably the only thing that stopped me buying that supercharged Blueprint AUIII Xr8 recently advertised on this site.

So my advice to the buyer is to really make sure he is clear on what he needs to do (ie register it as soon as it gets here as he is a WA resident)

yer mark they tell you that to get you to do it asap
i live in beckinham perth wa and we've dont it a few times and well we let the east rego almost run out before we put them over the pits but are ment to do it after having them here for 3 months
and still just recon its a revinue raiser last one we got transported buy KTI kangaroo transport for under $800 on top of a load and they didnt even care if we loaded the car up with extra crap
