Hello All
The wife had the timing belt done in her magna last week and the other day we were driving it when i heard this weird clunk followed by a rattle behind us on the road this is what i found....  Mitsubishi denied all knowledge of course i think its the belt tensioner what do you guys think??

That soet of tool is used for plugs etc, it is very similar to what would be used on the scew cap of a 44 gallon drum, where those 2 prongs sit either side os the lugs to stop ripping your thumbs off.
The lugs could also sit inside two holes of an plug that unscrews etc. |

Its hard to tell the size of the tool as there is nothing to compare the size with . Maybe put a fifty cent coin beside it .
I would think its an adjustable tool for doing up flat collars like the type that secure ginding discs to angle grinders ! Different grinders often have different hole spacings in the collars! This tool is adjustable to different grinders! Maybe the same idea is used on some part of your mitsubishi motor !

Now a member who does his own belt seems to think it's looks just like the crankshaft pulley remover (looks to be universal). but im really waiting to hear from another member who's a mech for like 30 years. I think he's even on here. Goes by the name of mal and has a 68 xt staion wagon if i remember correctly. he will be able to tellfor sure.

I think it is called an Adjustable Face Spanner, normally used for servicing seal and packing nuts on hydraulic cylinders.

You could always ring SPX directly and give them the part number. They’ll be able to identify if for you straight away.

ok now another member who was on the production line(assembling the engines) recons it's not heavy duty enough to be for the crankshaft.
But he's pretty confident that it's for the camshaft pulley so to line the belt up to the right teeth. |

Go back to Mitsubishi with it ... and ask them if they want their tool back seeing as you identified it as a part they needed to use to do the timing belt.
Then see what they say about "denying all knowledge about it". Could have caused a lot of other underbonnet damage though ... you are lucky i guess.

mate, i'd be printing the pic from the workshop manual that BOXO posted, walking into the dealer, show them the tool and the pic, dong them on the head with it, telling them not to lie to you and treating you like an idiot, and then ask for a free service next time for... A: bringing it back, B: the damage it COULD have done, and C: being dumb enuf to leave tools under bonnets.
