Default Header Tank Help

On ebay there is a brand new header tank, but it looks like its for a base model and dosen't have a low coolent sensor hole. My car has the low coolent sensor, so my question is, can my sensor be fitted to this header tank with no hole??

Cheers

Nup. Has to have the hole in it, or youd have to add one.

yep pretty much, just going to have to make sure it holds pressure.

hmmm. Got any tips for drilling the hole and sealing it adequately?? He’s got a tank with a sensor already in it but that’s twice the price :

honestly if you can stretch it, go for this one. i have doubts as to whether any aftermarket fitting etc or drilling a hole in would hold the pressure.

No real need to use one with a sensor ... you should be checking under bonnet often enough to make sure it is OK ... I seem to do fine without one on my ute.

Also ... B-series header tanks fit nicely as well ... I know ... I have one in the AU.
Just need the B-series middle radiator hose from the front of the header tank as it is different from the AUs.

I pciked mine up from the wreckers for about $35 2nd hand ... looks like new.

Don't know about that, I check under the bonnet all the time.
Last week was driving along and the sensor light came on. Pulled over straight away to find a breached radiator core.. have had a car without a sensor that did the head gasket before you knew you had a problem because once the water drained below the temp sender the guage (with no water around the sender) shows not too hot at all. When the tank sender indicates your water level is still well above the highest point of the engine and quick action can avert much expense. I may have been unlucky but I reckon the tank sensor saved me this time and I feel much more comfortable with one but each to their own.

The AU6s have failsafe cooling, so even with a breached radiator, the car will operate OK with no water - it basically shuts down cylinders and the transmission goes into Limp Home Mode to avoid damage. Looking at the temp gauge, as well as the high temp warning would do the same job as the low coolant level indicator.

As of rthe original question - Every tank has the screw in fitting, just some have a hole and some dont. If you drill the hole and swap all the bits over from your old tank, it will work like one that already had a hole.

Failsafe doesn't work if you have a non-SVI LPG system. I have had a constant battle with coolant leaks around the LPG system in mine, despite changing water hoses and hose clamps. My last attempt at a fix was to smear clear RTV silicon inside the hose ends before clamping. So far so good, but when the leaks start the header tank can empty in a couple of days. Usually the first sign of trouble is the aircon stops working. I'd love to retrofit the sensor to my car, that might be the next project.

Also, I had a top hose rupture in traffic while running on LPG. Luckily the bloke in the next lane spotted the coolant running out from under the car and called out to me. I switched to petrol to get somewhere safe to pull up, and the temp gauge never moved from 'O' (in NORMAL) the whole time.

Heavy eathmoving gear (trucks, dozers etc) is rigged with tank sensors for exactly that reason. In fact they shut down the engine when the level gets too low in the tank. It can be a PITA sometimes but it beats $250K+ for an engine swap.

Just a quick question. Can you wire in a level sensor for an AU2 XR6 that doesn`t have one, that is,is the loom hidden somewhere and be tapped into?I also feel safer having one,has saved me on earlier models.
