Apparently i have cv joints in my ba xr8

Hi im not real sure of this but a ford dealer told me over the phone this arvo that the cluncking coming from the rear is my "cv joints" i thought that rear wheel drive cars dont have cv joints only front wheel drive cars do.

it comes with independent rear suspension which has been around for half a century. as FourBarrel mentioned, if it's a sedan, you've got them.

That's them. Thems are the things that you hear in 10 Year old Magnas when they are trying to turn around in car parks (or trying to turn). They make a clicking noise when they fail.

I was under the impression that only FWD/AWD cars had them. I would never have thought that a non-steering axle would require CV Joints. Interesting.

Front Wheel Drive cars have CVs as the motor is driving the Fronts. Rear wheel drive will share the same principle if it has I.R.S.

anythins with independent suspension on the drive wheels will have cv joints, they have to allow for the constant change in velocity/angle(hence the name) when driving...
they have to be able to transmit drive at angles... ie suspension travel at maximum/minimum...
and yes they are usually the weakest point...

Not just this, its more a question of alignment and deflection in any shafts.

The Territory has a two-piece driveshaft with a Hookes joint (basic universal joint) in the centre and a CV joint at the rear diff. The Territory's rear axle is similar to that on the BA Falcon V8 (but I don't know if the driveshaft is similar). Darkside this could be what your dealer is referring to - but it is one CV joint not two.

The Territory could also use a CV joint where the Hookes joint is too but CV joints are apparently more expensive so dampers are used instead to reduce NVH. So I live with a certain amount of torsioning sensation (tail-wagging) under power. I don't know how many other Territory or Falcon owners have noticed this, most drivers probably wouldn't notice. A bit of a design fault IMO.

A little bit of explanation on this web page:

"In some vehicles the transmission output shaft and the differential input shaft are not parallel - the engine and transmission may be tilted up for clearance or the diff may be tilted for some reason. If the discrepancy in deflections is large, the manufacturer may have fitted constant velocity joints at one, or ideally both, ends of the prop' shaft to prevent vibration."

I get the same clunking noise everytime I apply the gas. Annoying... to say the least.

I was talking about prop shaft only BTW. Like Unco said you can also have them at the wheel hubs on independent suspension (even non-steering).

They're so common nowadays but still more costly (complex) than Hookes joint. I remember when BMC Mini came out in 1960s the motoring press was all shock horror about the replacement cost of the front CV joints (about $60 each in 1970s I recall). Then the Honda Civic came out and theirs were about $250 each but you didn't hear peep from the motoring press. Japanese of course and can't be faulted. I'm sure it won't take long for someone to pick on a Ford CV joint. If it's Ford it must be bad by definition.

I am pretty sure there is a CV joint in the tail shaft on the sedans also ! I towed a GT-P after it failed once !
