How do I tell if I have the standard Ford ones still ?
...and how will I know when I need to change them ? The car has done nearly 150k kilometres so is it about time to change them ? I'm asking because the ride is pretty hard (live axle and being lowered probably isn't helping). If the shocks are dead will a change to new ones be noticeable ?

A change will be noticeable. The thing is with suspension it degrades over many years so slowly that you do not notice how bad its become until you put new parts in.

The OEM Ford ones are just yellow Monroes IIRC.

How low is it Lox?
I put XR springs on my SR, with Pedders Sportsrider shocks. I find the ride a little too harsh and would have gone Pedders Comfort Gas next time. Then again, I am 37 and younger blokes would probably go much lower and harder with their suspension settings than I! LOL! Having said that, the harder I drive it the better it handles, but for day to day driving plus that little extra, the Comfort Gas shocks would have done better. Next time! GK

i just replaced mine, after 175000ks, they were making a clunking noise, and when braking and going over corrugations the wheels would bounce and brakes would lock up! got new monroe gt gas struts/shocks and all good! and new nolathane bushes.

Lox, you'll definitely notice a difference in the way the car handles and rides. I'm running Gabriel Ultra's all round - they really are a fantastic shock. Lowered and live axle becomes a lot more liveable.

cant go past Boge shocks
cant fault them hard enough when you need it.. soft enough when you dont!! you need new shocks when you go over a speed hump and the sump nearly touches the ground when your front wheels come off the other side and then if your rear shocks are buggered the exhasut tip nearly hits the ground when the rear wheels come off the end of the speed hump(sharp round speed humps are the best test)

Go for Koni's, Whiteline or Bilstein.. but depends on how much you want to spend, but give me a PM, i'll get you priced, girlfriend of mine works in a suspension place in brissy, she gets me stuff very very cheap.. like VERY cheap..
