Thermostat

Hi. Just been reading a few threads on leaking thermostat housings as mine is currently doing so. I have just bought a new upper housing and have found that some people say it could also possibly be an o ring.

What i wanted to know is where is this o ring located, ie. is it on the actual thermostat itself or elsewhere and what is the seal they are referring to.

Also, Do ford sell metal thermostat gaskets as i have heard the fibre ones are pretty crap.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cant help with the 'O' ring bit, but did you make sure that ALL the old gasket is scraped off and if necessary file both surfaces flat.

The o ring your refering to is on the metal pipe going into the lower thermostate housing, is yours leaking in that area?.

I think ford don't actually sell a gasket for where the top thermostate housing meets the bottom one, what most people do and what i did was use those gaskets in a tube thing where you apply between the housings and then let it dry and once its dry it will form a rubbery gasket material.

My leak is between the lower and upper thermostat housings and its also leaking from the small hose going from the upper housing to the overflow tank. I guess i won't change the o ring then as it's not leaking from the lower housing.

Have you checked the rubber gasket on the actual thermostat? If it's cracked, it will leak. Also, with the little hose, use a proper hose clamp, not the pinch type one and it should seal it up.
