My car had developed an occasional miss when idling. Plugs/leads/coil thought I but this evening I started it with the drivers door open and there is a definite leak in the exhaust somewhere so I guess I found the reason for the miss.
Now the question is who to take it to in Northside Bris? I'm not after the cheapest deal just a reliable exhaust place (please don't mention Midas - been there done that - never again). After a stock replacement only... droning on long trips ain't my thing - although my wife may disagree, lol. |

Hey Ron, Bob at Canberra Car styling....oops, wrong part needed.
The exhaust would only cause a miss if the muffler and/or cat has collapsed, wouldn't it? Do they have Carline mufflers up your way? The bloke I go to donw here is part of the Carline group, and he's good. Not saying they all are, but he definitely is. Other options include Roadways, Powertone and the "golden touch" mob (whom you have already mentioned).

Sorry didnt read the first post properly. As JC redback do a nice after market one. Its not to expenseive and easily installed yourself if your keen. Most exaust shops should be able to help you out as there's not much they can stuff up with a stock pipe, although i have been wrong plenty of times before

It's southside rather than northside, but Men At Work at Capalaba are great value. I got a 2.5" system there, but I'm sure they can sort you out with something more stock if that's what you're after. 2.5" mandrel bent cat-back was $200, to give you an idea of their prices.

Hmmm, can an exgaust leak cause a miss at idle? The flange where my cat meets the 'cat-back' has a leak I'm quite sure and I do have a miss at idle.

Thanks for the names I'll check out who does what to whom and get it organised. It may be that it has developed a miss as well as an exhaust issue but I'm not a great believer in coincidence (keep an eye out for my upcoming "leads/plugs/coil" post, lol.) |

I highly recommend Mac's Mufflers at Pickering St, Enoggera... Have done a few exhausts for me now, and the quality of their work is fantastic...

mate go and see these people I was told that my cat was had it and needed a new one so I done the usual ring around and ended up going to CARLINE at CABOOLTURE. the guys there had a look and it turned out to be the weld where the cat and the exhaust met so it only cost me $15 instead of the $160 or even over 200 for a new one. The phone number is 54992227 good luck with it.

Thanks guys... for convenience either Enoggera or Caboolture (friends close by at both) would be the go.
I'll call both today and see which witch is which. |

I'm sure I read that the small increase in power an XR6 has over the Fairmont is because of the different exhaust. Might as well do that (particularly if that one small mod has me running low 12's...) |

Yep, manifold is common (to all I6s on the AU series). Just the fairmont VCT system was strangled for NVH levels, and thus is rated 4kw less than the XR6 VCT.
For non-VCT Fairmonts (ie not Ghias), the exhaust system is the same as run of the mill forte, but Ford charge twice as much for the Fairmont one than the forte one - all Fairmont/Ghia parts have a suffix of $$, lol.

Ok, just got back from looking up "NVH levels" lol.
Yeah, I might as well unstrangle it. If the noise gets too much I'll shove a potato up the pipe... |

Just as a follow up I ended up with a Redback 2 1/2" system from A1 at Brendale (brother in law lives nearby so got coffee as well).
It's certainly louder than stock... I don't know if it will be too loud for us but I'll let it carbon up for a couple of weeks and we'll see. A1 seem to know their stuff and job was started and finished on time. edit: oh, car hasn't missed at idle thus far. |

Following up the follow up...
The exhaust was too loud for us. Was ok around town but out on the highway was unbearable. Main prob was when was when cruise control was engaged, sort of:- brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmBRRRMMMMMM brrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmBRRRRRRRRRRM brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmBRRRRRRRRRRRRRMbrrrrrrmm mmmmBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRM. Would have been impossible on a long trip. Anyhoo, back to the exhaust shop and they fitted a "glass lined" resonator (I think that what it is) and is much better. Still noisy but not the huge load/unload differential. I think it will be ok (we're off down south in a couple of weeks) so we might go for a run up the coast this weekend to prove it. Should also mention that the car is much more free revving without the restricted ghia exhaust. The miss has not reappeared to this point so (I think) all is good. |

id say you will be fine mate
sounds as tho yours sounded as mine does at the moment its fun for a while.. but does get annoying when using cruise control and light throttle applications etc.. but Wide Open Throttle it sounds AWESOME

Glad to hear you think it's OK now though, and if you want to keep the free flowing feeling but reduce the noise again, you could get an additional small straight through muffler put in after the main one (before the diff). It will still be better than stock, but should knock the noise levels down a tad.
