Read some interesting reports here on the use of clay bars. So got myself one, well called quik clay actually. Gave it a try and was ok but not really blown away with it. Thing is, they are suposed to remove build up of impurities on your paintwork and windows. Seemed to work well on the glass so thought I would give it a go on my Mini. Bearing in mind the cars 32 years old the windscreen was a bit speckled. Cleaned it up great and was very pleased with the result. That is until I took the car (the day after cleaning the screen) on a 50k trip to a local car show. Got a small stone thrown up from a 4WD in front..BANG no windscreen! Could be just a coincidence but I think using the clay bar on an old windscreen may have done something to the strenghth maybe broken surface tension or something. All I know is that Im not going to use it on our XC screen. Need less to say I was more than a bit windswept by the time I got home. Not worried about the screen they are easy to fit on minis and I already have another one lined up, just ****ed about picking bits of glass up for the next 6 months. Even smashed my rear view mirror.

I shouldn't be laughing as I know the pain of a broken windscreen, but....

I asked about the greasy streaks that would be left behind after cleaning my windows in the detailing section and they recommended using a clay bar to clean it. It doesn't matter what product I use or the cloths I use, they're always there. I can't stand dirty/streaky windows especially after spending 2+ hours waxing, vacuuming and cleaning the interior:(
Can I ask, did you clean the inside of the window as well as the outside and what were the results? Also, where did you purchase the clay bar from and how much, if you don't minnd me asking? I never got around to buying one and trying it out... |

If whatever hit the windscreen also smashed the mirror it must have been a decent whack.
I say just coincidence. |

You can buy the Meguiars kits for about $38 at Supercrap Auto, or else check out site sponsor Waxit for a wide range of other quality gear. |

^haha!!!
those claybar kits are the best thing since sliced bread, i swear by mine and have recommended it to dozens of people. try using it on a small section and then polishing that and an unclayed section, the results are incredable and as an added bonus it makes the polishing easier!(the older the paint the more obvious the difference) then next time after you wash and chamios your car just spray on the quik detailer (or mothers showtime in my case) and wipe off - like brand new!

Seriously for a second or two. What effect does claying the windscreen have on rain and the wipers?
Does it sort of have a bit of a rain-ex effect? Do the wipers still work properly or do they just glide over the top?

I have been using Clay Bar on Paintwork and Windscreens for years without any problems. I think you just had a bit of bad luck.

I think you might find that the screen in your mini is not a laminated ( DO you know if it is/was ?), thats why it shatered/exploded into pieces.
If it was laminated it would have stayed together. Cheers mick |
