well it didnt quite implode, but i was driving along yesterday down wellington road near clayton uni, and the car started hesitating badly, so i dropped it back to neutral, and it stalled. i pulled over, switched to petrol to see whether or not there was somethng wrong with the gas, but there wasn't. it still didn't fire, just cranked and compression locked.
the engine is in an ed fairmont, and uses a dizzy instead of the coilpack. so anyway, today we went back and tried to figure out what had happened. it wasn't the coil because there was spark, and it wasn't fuel cos there was plenty coming through. i took the dizzy out, and had a look down into the engine, and saw that it was pretty mangled. we figured out that whatever the shaft is that the dizzy connects to inside the block, has been stripped or bent, or something, causing the starting problems. anyone got any more info for me as to whats inside that bit, or a diagram or something? thanks guys

you have stripped you auxillary shaft. So your oil pump must have siezed which stops the auxillary shaft from turning thus stripping all the teeth.
Big job to repair$$$$, probably drop the sump and have a better look, broken timing chain guide can cause this or bits of foreign metal filings in the sump oil. |

Bad luck mate.
Since you're gonna pull the engine anyway, it would probably be cheaper and safer, to grab another low km AU long motor and swap that in. Just get it without accessories to save some bucks. They seem to be getting pretty cheap these days, and I've seen them as low as $300 with apparently good kms.

Yay, our smiley's dance in unison^^^^!
I admit it, I am secretly a wheezer V8 lover - there's something just right with their combination of a perfect sound and lack of power!!!

Perfect sound? A wheezer sounds nothing like a 3.8 litre MkII Jag! :

Ok guys,
got the car back from dad, he replaced the timing chain, aux gear, dizzy shaft, various other things, and chucked it back in. running very smooth now and looking good. with the tow (90km's) it cost just under $500 for everything, so i'm happy.
