Try a slimline numberplate that won't protrude below the bumper into the radiator duct.

AS TAKEN FROM RTA WEB SITE:

Number plates
Number plate basics
All vehicles registered in NSW must have official number plates mounted and clearly displayed at the front and rear. Motorcycles and trailers only need to have number plates on the rear.

The plates must match the details on the vehicle's Certificate of Registration, and must have an appropriate sticker if the vehicle has an LPG or CNG installation.

Not sure where you are, and state to state laws may differ. In Queensland, with a receipt or order confirmation number, you can replace a damaged rear plate with the plate from the front. Generally, you must show both however!

Slimline plate or number plate cover?
Or just shove a rag in and around the sides so the edges are covered?

must be special permits for policeman`s private cars in qld????. :

seen the local bloke and his misses driving their vw van around on several occasions with no plates at all ???????????

might be a legitimate reason but looks a bit odd. very small town so everyone knows who it is.

Only ways to get around no front number plate is either;

1. The car is being moved under permit from one place to another, or
2. You have a trade plate on the rear of the car.

other than that I'd go for the slimline with some sort of custom jobbie done on it.

I am at odds as to why you would ever ask such a question, anyone with a license & half a brain knows plates (front and rear) on a car are to be displayed at all times.

lol want a xy i think thats an easy answer, but it does raise a good question with those slimline plates, do you need official plates from the rta or if you could get a plate like that and put big numbered stickers to replicate the numbers on your numberplate, im guessing the cops would book you anyway but it would be pretty cool having a silver plate with black and red numbers

If your in NSW I think you'll find they have to be RTA issue and reflective.

Youre thinking of America, they only have to display rears.

As far as I know, all states in Australia require front and rear plates.

really?

we ran with the front plate bluetacked to the windscreen for 2 weeks. when the xr got wiped out and had left side front and rear panels done the plate didnt fit the bar (dealer dogied it onto previous bar) so we had to wait 2 weeks for a new plate to be printed. strange

In Victoria on a motor vehicle, except motor bikes, a front and rear number plates must be clearly displayed.

Not to mention, you will gain a lot of Police attention if you drive around without a front plate.

Not worth the hassle, because of a car cover?

Oh, you need to put an 'n' in 'a' - "want-an-xy" ;)
