Obviously the large car market is completely shot to pieces, and has been for a while, but was is concerning is that the brand new FG model is selling less than what the outgoing BF was selling last year.

Will have to wait until we get more info from other manufacturers (Mazda etc)
Corolla, Yaris, Epica, Barina, Focus have had greater % drops than Falcon and Commodore. But the FG definitely needs to start selling

The question I still ask myself is how is it that 2000 people actually decided that the VE was a better car than the FG. Considering the Falcon is considerably Newer, Safer, more economical and has a much better interior, it makes no logical sense.

Holdens competitive pricing is why they are selling so many at the moment.

SS sedan - $39 kay drive away?

Holden has always been price competitive and having 2 years of production already paid for they can afford to guts their prices.

Sportwagon started to become available, especially the registering of quite a few for the press and dealer demos, as well as the SV6 and SS offer would probably explain a good chunk of it. But the worry for all top 3 manufacturers is the overall decline of 10-18%.

It's not necessarily that 2000 more people found the VE a better car than the FG, there could be a myraid of reasons why they chose VE. Bias, price, marketing, fleet deals...

I'd have thought the Focus and Festiva may have been beneficiaries of a move from larger cars but the Focus dropped dramatically, as did the Barina.

Are the Toyota figures the same way as the others or back to front? (perhaps a mistake on the header..)

The other telling factor is the total industry sales:

Quote:
Key Points:

- The August 2008 industry volume of 77,324 is down 10,882 vehicle sales or 12.3% on August 2007 (88,206 vehicles). August 2008 (26.0) had 1 less selling day than August 2007 (27.0), resulting in a decrease of 292.9 vehicles per day or 9.0%.

- The August 2008 industry volume is down 6,652 or 7.9% on July 2008 (83,976 vehicles), in seasonally adjusted terms the August monthly volume equates to a 10.1% decrease versus July. The year-to-date 2008 market of 703,995 vehicles is running ahead of the same period in 2007 by 0.7% or 5,122 vehicle sales.

- The Passenger Vehicle Market decreased by 6,634 vehicle sales (-12.6%) over the same month last year; the Sports Utility Vehicle Market, decreased by 3,207 vehicle sales (-18.4%),the Light Truck Market, decreased by 615 vehicle sales (-4.2%) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market decreased by 426 vehicle sales (-12.7%) over August 2007.

- Toyota was market leader in August, followed by Holden and Ford. Year-to-date Toyota leads Holden with a margin of 76,672 vehicle sales, or 10.9 market share points.
Toyota is down as well.

The only upside is that Falcon outsold Aurion/Camry combined.

Otherwise this is a disaster for Ford especially considering that the Commodore is old, slower, less safe and uses more fuel than the Falcon :

Other positives I hadn't noticed at first, Ranger sold over 1,100 units, and beat The Rodeo/ Colorado combo, 1158 v 1035. Mondeo was finally on target of about 500 (498 actually) Falcon ute outsold Holden ute. Fiesta isn't doing to badly considering it is at the end of it's model life.

Back on the Negatives, Is this the first month that the Territory has slipped under 1000? Even with that it still outsold Kluger and Captiva. It really needs a diesel engine (even though the Kluger doesn't have one).

How much will Holdens 99c fuel offer affect September sales I wonder.

Exactly!
It's not all doom and gloom and it really isn't THAT bad.
Besides, it's not the lack of local sales that I'm worried about.
It's the lack of Falcon exports that's the real worry!!!

Although, like everyone else, I can not for the life of me understand why anbody would option a VE over an FG???
Fleet sales maybe?
I know the company I work for will only allow you to option a VE or Aurion!!!
No Falcon's allowed...
Even though Ford has a partner recognition program with our company, offering discounted vehicles to employees...

Ford desperately need to get an updated Territory (including deisel option!!!) out on the market.

The current model is starting to get very long in the tooth.
Where are the updated FG engines and drive-train?
Where is the updated styling that replaces the current cars four year old design?
Where is the deisel option?
Why are FPV flogging the F6X with the OLD motor?
Why isn't the Turbo equipped with the new 270kw motor?

Why is Tezza being left behind???

It seems the whole market is down anyway, not just Ford, Mitsubishi, Holden, Toyota, Hyundai, all down for Year to Date figures.

Just a thought, what's worse, the 277 people who bought a new Epica, or the 128 people who bought a new Ford Escape, I'd be ashamed to own either

Certainly not as bad as perhaps most thought. 35 Focus convertibles is good, but the rest of the range is down 600 :(

Looks to me like the whole market took a massive hit over last year.....its read ink pretty much all over.

Although falcon did badly there is no doubt commodore numbers benefited from sportswagon sales of both dealer demos and pent up demand. That and graphic price gouging.....i've never seen such heavy discounting of commodores brand new for private sale.....just walk up and get instant 10% off RRP, drive away.

This 99c deal holden has is just a way to keep sales going in a cheaper fashion then that level of discounting.

On the positive side good to see mondeo hitting its numbers pretty regularly now and ranger is going quite well given fleets seem to have embraced it as the 'second choice' after hilux. I think with downward movement in interest rates (even if it amounts to little) will create a better climate for sales generally in the near future. Still, with the whole 5 star ancap result and PROVEN fuel economy advantages of the Falcon over the commodore (LPG etc.) you'd think fleets would wake up and smell the coffee and dump the VE quick smart by now. Hell you can run a LPG FG for less than a corolla, i know resale is horrible on large cars but can't these fleet guys count???

Things are crook in Broadmeadows.

I feel good that 4 months ago I supported them with my coin - although I would have rathered spend it (for their sakes) on the FG. But it doesn't do it for me.

And looking at those figures, it(FG) doesn't do it for a lot of other people. I mean, Pox o doors selling like they are, buyer reaction can't be ALL dictated by fuel costs - can it? Pox o doors are still moving.

While i would agree fuel cost aren't the only issue, you can bet large cars in particular are hurt very much so by the perception of high fuel costs. That and resale are there two biggest negatives as far as the private buyer is concerned.

Also, i don't accept commodores are still selling....they aren't really. Demo wagons may have inflate the numbers but i think huge discounting by holden on the commodore (got knows how big the discounts going to large fleet orders are) even at retail walk in level. I can't imagine holden making much money on the commodore at all at the moment, probably waiting for the market to settle down and see whether it is worth doing an update (can't afford it).

The results for ford overall weren't too bad considering the drop in some competitors models too. As for Falcon, what can you expect??? The large car segment has totally lost its base.....even worse than when BF was around (sad but true). Ford cutting jobs recently and reducing production makes much more sense than what holden is doing RE selling the farm - if it wasn't for (marginally profitable) export numbers keeping holden alive they would be collosal trouble right now.....

I think a big reason for the difference between the Commodore and Falcon is simply looks.
People like to show off their shiny new toy,as vein as it sounds.
The Commodore has more street presence than the new Falcon.
I have been driving the new Fg at work and it is a great car,but most guys at work think its cooler to be in the Holden, some even admitting the fg is the better car,but they would rather be seen in the Commodore,as they say it looks tuff and its a Holden.
