Default Its done it again!

I drove the AU too canberra and back for a few days this week. Had a bit of a holiday with the girlfriend to try and forget all the s*** that happened with the car.

WHen we first left, im pretty sure the car didnt know it had extractors and still thought it had a turbo bolted too it as it was running pig rich and like crap. I thought a bit of a trip should blow some cobwebs out and get it learning the cam again.

We headed out saturday lunch time so it was starting to heat up. I must say i was worried about how the car would go on a decent sized trip. AS it has the battery in the boot, the catch can fitted pretty far away, the cam, the extractors, etc etc. Oh and a hole in the sump..... (stupid oil returns)

With all that said, the AU managed a PB of 8.5L p/100km on the way too canberra, and an average of 9.7L p/100km around canberra.

I filled up often to test the literage to make sure the trip computer wasnt lieing. From Wagga and around canberra i got 375km of driving, i filled up with 32 Liters of fuel. This is an average of 8.53.. This was around 100km of city driving too which bumped it up too..

For a car that needs tuning, running pretty ruff, and running very rich, i was stocked hehe.

Also out of curiosity, how much blow by should i catch in my catch can? I have it fitted it sequence between the PCV and the stock source on the plenum. I got around 3/4 of the can filled with oil and condensation over the few days?

Around town i get a few specks of oil here and there, but on the highway it was pumping through.

that sounds like way to much oil u should barely get any in them over that period on a good motor.

Thats what has me worried.. There was a hell of a lot of blow by.

I mean for a while i was up it a lot and was at 4000 a lot. So it would be blowing a bit more then normal.

I might replace my PCV and see if that makes a difference.

man thats incredible fuel econemy. as for the catch can yeah way to much oil. but if it's not blowing smoke and running ok , well don't know.

i tell you what, if your running rich, then id really love to see what happens when you have the mixtures right!!AFAIK the AU's had an average economy of 9.7L/100 from new...so to me sounds like you may be running a little lean!! and as for blowby....new PCV may fix this, but with that much oil....im thinking maybe try nursing it around for a while and see how much oil builds up over the same kms. if its still bad, perhaps put that hole in the sump into use....a drain in the bottom of the cartch can with a pipe to the hole in your sump. be sure to put a one-way check valve in that line to ensure the oil doesnt try feeding up the pipe.

I have a catch can set up the same way for about 12 months, the car does a fair bit of track work at high revs. I checked it the other day b4 another track day and the can would have had approx 50m of oil, not even 1/4 full.

Here is a picture of what came out of the catch can.. Few off things are happening...

The oil in the catch can was black (as shown), but the oil in the sump is still a golden brown colour (like new). The engine is also right on the FULL line which is where it has stayed since the last service..



Another odd thing is the can only filled up on the highway and not around town?

I have emptied it and taken if for a drive around town giving it short burst at WOT. No sign of the can cathcing any blow by..

Any Suggestions?

Also if you looks closly at the catch can you can see where it was filled too.

This may sound rediculous to you but I have had a similar oil problem with a catch can on my sons toyota. The vacuum hose looked similar set up to yours where the hose took a dive straight from the PCV and the lenght was excessive. Under high vacuum situations (highway) the length of the hose on the PCV side of the can would allow a little bit of "suck in" which in turn increased the vacuum on that side of the can and increase the chance of excess oil getting sucked up where it would then flow in the hose getting sucked up.
The fix on my sons was easy, I replaced most of the hose with polished aluminium using rubber to only join everything up. Give it a try it will only look good and hurt nothing.

Doesn't sound rediculous at all mate.. Makes sence actually.. Doesn't do it around town, but on the highway is does.

I cant picture what you did to fix it though sorry. You said you replace hose with polished alumimum? So you had a length of thin aluminium tubing that was then connected using rubber as the joiners?

That wouldnt looks pretty good too i think. Am i able to have so pictures of how you did it please?

He has since sold the car but he only sold it a month or so ago so I will see if he still has the guys phone number that bought it. We got the tubing through a steel merchant and made the bends sepaerate and had them TIG welded on then p[olished. All this was overkill but being a young bloke he was into the bling factor. Before we started we worked out roughly the path of it the bent a template using some fencing wire. Hope this helps if I get the pics I will get back to you.
