Pacific Highway UHF channels

Driving to QLD tomorrow from newcastle, just wondering what UHF channels are used by most people and truck drivers? always good to get a smokey report hehe

40 is generally the road channel.

Channel 11 ( I think) is the calling channel, and channel 16 is often also used.

Then channel 1 to 8 are often use when in rangs of appropriate repeaters.

Do a scan and see whats busy

When i'm on the Bruce or the Pacific i stick to ch40 - the road channel.
Cheapest way of detecting a flash for cash or a candy car camping somewhere.

Most use 40, however, the big time heroes use 29 on the Coast Road. Personally, I wouldn’t even turn the thing on with all of the garbage on them these days.

By the way, we don’t call them smokeys over here.

True That! I used to switch mine onto 40 and sometimes 29 but the amount of dribble that gets spouted over the air is unbelievable, so I don't even bother. Half the time there's idiots making up fake reports anyway about the locations of radars.

You'll also have to look out for the "fella standing on the side of the road with a hair dryer". Channel 40 would be your best bet but if you have kids in the car be warry of the language used.

i didnt think so, but was watchin smokey and the bandit

today and couldnt think of another nickname the cops called now days.

thanks for the channels will have a listen... ill be driving up alone so be good if i get in range to have a chat... altho i only have a small handheld UHF the range aint the best but see how i go

No, it’s for the big time wan-kerrs and it’s not worth listening to. Genuine truck drivers use 40.

same here mate. i bought mine for $50 five and a half years ago and i never intended for it to transmit, only receive. I'm able to receive almost as well as a mate of mine who has a sundowner and a flagpole, but transmit is a couple of car lengths where as his is a couple of dozen kilometres.

For a year I used to do over 1500klms a week of highway driving for work and always had it on ch40, and in all that time i don't think i ever heard a report that wasn't true, either i had already seen it as i was going the opposite way or i approached it within minutes. Best radar detector ever.

Don't get me wrong, most of the reports on there are actually genuine but one day a few weeks ago I heard 4 false reports in the space of about an hour.

Is 40 the same channel for Sydney through to the Central Coast and Newcastle as well. I've noticed channel 6 is worst for the bogans to be on for that area.

BE a risk to rely on it for reports.
Nothing like zipping along, feeling smug you will be warned in time to slow down, only to find a car nobody had reported!

Bit like the opposite of old Goodyear ad. If it Fails only once a year, its an expensive year.
Better bet? See them numbers with red circle round them on the poles?

Aas regular user of Pacific hwy, 29 is the Go - works a treat on the F3 on my daily to. As soon as im in sydney, i turn it off - every channel gets bogans.

I find 29 is pretty clean and very reliable for the coast road.

As mentioned before 29 and 40 are the main ones i know of.

Mate of mines UHF has the over 40 channels and we just leave it always scanning. It picks up all the police lines and can sometimes make for interesting listening.

^^^^^^ I thought Police radio was encripted nowdays.

I sometimes travel the Pacific from Mid North Coast up or down with a UHF, I use 29 as said before and the trucks just say "theres one at" or 'I just saw one at", no explanation needed everyone knows one what.

I used to travel up to 80,000kms a year quite a few years back and we used to call them HP's (marked highway patrol cars) or plain wrappers (unmarked cars) and flash for cash (cameras)..

Some are, some aren't. Brisbane Metro is, Redcliffe isn't etc.

The common terms are: flash for cash = speed camera, candy car = red marked up highway patrol, evil knievel = motorbike cop, hair dryer = radar/lidar gun

DO NOT rely on the UHF for the location of police or RTA. Only half of them ever get reported. And there are too many people who love the sound of their own voice. If you have kids, leave the UHF off and obey the road law at all times! That way there is no risk of being caught doing anything wrong.

GPS for fixed cams and UHF 40 for everything else.

I have seen the UHF prevent likely dramas plenty of time - eg - stock over the road, road kill after a blind rise or other debris on the road.

Per other's, road channel is 40 nationally, though yes, 29 seems to be used on the NSW Pacific Highway route. That said, I leave it on 40 and perhaps scan at times when on the Pacific.

Road channel is not for chit chat per se, and the users will quickly tell you that. Keep the devices off in cities and towns if you have sensitive ears.

The driver handbooks of WA and SA suggest CB and each mentions the government allocated emergency channels as a potential alternative method of contact during crises, should other methods fail, and each mentions the 'road channel' on each band (UHF and HF's 27Mhz).
