I recently upgraded my tinny with a 25hp merc to a 15foot fibreglass 70hp yamaha, and went for a weekend bay cruise fishing trip. Did 80km and used 39 litres!! Might have averaged 20km/h in some average conditions, and some good conditions.

And you think V8 GT falcons and whatever are bad! Take a boat for a spin :-)

i can feel your pain the club boat ,30 ft cat uses 100-140 litres an hour and its economical .i dont put a price on pulling coral trout off the swains reef but .

out boards are shocking especially the 2 strokes
our gilflite javelin mid mount 351 Cleveland can get 6 people about 3 sessions each on a tank. that's with 5 in boat 1 wakeboarding

I know its not a boat but i saw a VE Statesman V6 at pickles with 99L/100km. Who said Holdens are good on fuel? I know its obviously been thrashed but damn!

you do realize that a vehicle at idle will show silly figures like that don't you? put it in a yard for days/weeks at a time and it's a no brainer.

Ok no i did'nt know that, but the car wasnt idling, and they were for ever moving all the cars in and out while i was there, so i dont think it had been sitting there for a very long time.

have a car idling for 30 minutes, move it 100 meters, then leave it idling again for an hour, what kind of Liters/100Km do you think you will get? Keep doing the same thing for a few days.... figure it out.

if commodores got 99L to 100Km they would have had trouble selling the first one back in 1978, let alone 2008.

yes outboards do use some fuel . On the upside filling a tinny wont make the bank manager cry like other boats . We have a 35 foot flybridge on birth and its tanks were filled just after Christmas all 1200 litres worth

I don't know much, if anything, about boat engines, but I have had a longing to buy an old launch with an inboard motor. What is the general fuel consumption comparo?

every carbyed boat will have different consumptions fugues but for you average ski hull with inboard 5.0l -6.0l v8 compared to the same hull with a out board the inboard v8 will all ways be better providing good condition of the engine

the other day 4 of use had a large run/set each from 6pm till just befor 9pm and only used under 1/4 of a tank if that and with some spirited driving for a couplea 100m

ours is a 17ft clinker

there's heaps of friction in the water and while there's a lot of out board's out there with fairly high H.P numbers they don't have the torque of the inboard as there small displacement engines.

also have you seen how much it costs to re-pair---overhaul a out board or even to buy a new one $$$$$ that"s one very big reason they stated putting inboards in boats

Our ski boat runs a mild 308 and we can spend a whole day out on the water skiing and tubing and not have to worry about fuel at all.

I have managed 56lt per 100km on the trip comp after 22 laps of a circuit in the GT. Oh, and that included the drive home of around 40km.

The 250hp fourstroke on my 7m plate mono returns at cruise RPM of 4800 - 1.2km / lt or 83lt per 100. That's about 58kmph and 48lt /hr consumption.

Flat out @ 6000rpm the Yamaha V6 with VCT drinks around 85lt/hr for 70kmph (you do the maths on that consumption........) spinning a LEXOR 3 blade 17" 'big wheel' propellor. She's a tad under powered...

yae we occasionally troll for tuna with a similar setup . let me know when you get here beers always cold and fish always biting up in pittwater !

as bad as boats

on my race jetski 800cc you only get about 30km out of 25ltr
and the supercharged / turbo charged ones get about 2 hours out of about 60ltr tank if your having fun on them

they are no better than a standard I6 falcon

they will use roughly 70L in 6 hours....
i dont know what kms.... as the jetskis only run with hours on the clock not kms

and they come supercharged out of the box.. 225hp our race ski at the moment is running about 279hp-300hp hasnt been tested as its still being repaired from the 2nd day we had it

Although those consumption figures are shocking, lucky I don't live at the coast otherwise it could get expensive. I want to eventually by a boat or a jetski a little later on. Do these things run on normal pump fuel like Ultimate or do they need special crap?

yep normal pump fuel , unleaded or premium . Bigger boats generally use diesel though.

I fill up my 25hp Tinnie twice a year (40L tank). Use it about every 3 weeks on average. Uses bugger all.

My old ski boat with 05 Merc 75 could go all day on about 30L

The Malibu Wakesetter runs about 50L for a solid full day. 4 blokes, $60 fill, thats $15 each fella's...

Given I supply the boat, when we are all out together they all cover the full fuel cost.
