Hi all...
It seems our luck in W.A. concerning radar detectors is going to finally run out. With rumors circulating that they will be outlawed within the year. I'm not surprised that this has not been done sooner though. I'm curious in knowing how our friends in the eastern states combat the ban of radar detector use. Do you guys still use them? I see the police have a radar detector detector called a STALCAR. How effective are these at catching you out? Has many people been caught? I see you can buy a new BEL radar detector which is hidden from the police STALCAR detector. Has anyone used these? Anyone in the eastern states with some info would be much appreciated.

Every 12 months or so this one pops up.
They say they are going to ban them. But so far we've been lucky.

The Stalcar's RDD's are rare and not common. You will also never see them in cities as they false as much as normal RD's.
Have a look at the Escort 9500ci if you want the best. I am sure people use them in eastern states, it is just that the penalties are tough if caught and the lazy governments are using cameras more now and less radars/lasers, as they get more money from cameras.

Sales guy at work was just done for having a radar detector. Was caught by the police radar detector detector, so they do work. He only had it because an American company associate left it here. Well thats what the letter they prepared so he can try and get out of the fine says lol.
Was a decent fine and quite a lot of points too.

I live in NSW I use one depending on where I'm going the fine is $1200 and 9 demerit points never had problems with it being detected by a cop car and it detects them before I see them thats all that matters.

I was told that in the eastern states they are allowed to search your car and if they still cant find it,they will tow it away and stip it until they do. Is this true?? This is the one which is supposed to be undetectable: https://www.beltronics.com/store/sti-driver.html

Whats the point of spending $$ on a unit that only does what your right foot should do?

I got sick of getting speed camera fines for just doing 7 or 8 ks over the limit and spending my time constantly looking at the speedo instead of the road. It has made me a much more relaxed and safer driver. However I know that they are abused by people who use them to deliberately break the speed limit.

Highly doubt they'll be banned here but even if they do, it will mean more business for the guys that sell the stealth units which are totally undetectable.
I personally use a V1 which can detect radar and laser both front and rear, the best $750 I ever spent!...not a single speeding fine since.

It is amazing to read some of the comments here.
Radar detectors are EVIL because they let you know if there is radar around. So some here possession of a radar detector is worse than kiddie porn or heroin.... All new SATNAVs have speed camera locators. Are they evil? Most radio stations daily broadcast the location of radars. Are they evil? UHF CH40 is constantly full of information regarding location of radar and traffic cars. Is it evil? Should all this be banned also? I wonder if, as a part of registration, you had to fit a GPS tracker about the size of your e-toll dongle that recorded you speed and position randomly and uploaded it to a central database every time you passed an e-toll or equivalent causing you to be fined EVERY time you went 1km/h over a prescribed limit would you just accept that as part of your life? If all cars, as part of registration, were hard limited to 110km/h and prohibited to be modified or used on race tracks, would you just accept it? If all new cars had to fit the P plate rules and all existing cars had to be converted to P plate compatible within 5 years meaning the only place you would find a V8 or turbo would be in a museum and it would have to be permanently deactivated would you just accept it? All of these draconian impositions will save lives and help end the government financial crisis, I am sure of it and SO ARE THEY.... BAA BAA You people are your own worst enemy and the reason you have so many problems, especially is some states, is that you just accept anything you are told is good for you is ACTUALLY good for you.... By the way, if you think none of this could ever happen then just look at what happened to the shooting community 15 years ago and now how the whole thing has been accepted as a "good for society". |

that is pretty terrifying that, that could actually happen. Slight head towards Communism is what comes to mind here. I think I will hide my V8 the day they decide to try and do that.

Isnt lidar being used in suburban areas anyway? Radar detectors seem more relevant to the open highway.Anybody confirm this?

The Labor NT government introduced the speed limits into NT a couple of years ago, only to see a rise in road deaths up there.... Speed cameras haven't been proven to reduce the road toll, only raise revenue... And i suspect that the introduction of a ban of radar detectors in WA will have no bearing on road deaths in WA The reality is that a lot of sheep on this form now think that the ban of radar detectors is a good idea, and speed cameras are a great idea too. They get paid enough, so tell them. And stop ever feeling 'guilty' for owning one. LIB's Murray Criddle decided waay back, after discussion, to not ban the things as required under the then new ARR's, on the basis of the lack of evidence that owning one, or having one in the car switched-off caused crashes. Once you lose 'rights' you will rarely get them back. Understand Constitutionally, you have a right to all things, until law restricts that. Is it important GovCo WA Inc hear your complaint??? YES, because the geographical area surrounding greater Perth is inhabited by "political activist - road safety nazis", take it from me, these type will do all they can to get you out of your private motor car, and that means to make ownership and operation of it particularly miserable indeed. I face them down here in my home state, sometimes they travel to places like NT 'to create change', or WA . . . That said, what WA could do, is simply restrict L, P1, P2 holders from having one in the car or possession whatsoever. That, people could live with. You could also prohibit convicted hoons or those that have recorded crash histories from owning the devices.

A bit of interesting reading on radar detector detectors on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_detector_detector The final sentence: "Then in late 2008 the SpectreIV was released, citing improved range over the Spectre III and the ability to detect every radar detector on the market today including the previously undetectable Bel STi, STi-r and Escort's 9500ci." |

No radar detector is detectable if it is switched off.
Police also do not have the right to search your car, if there is not probable cause. Suspecting you of having one, is not enough grounds for a search, unless their RDD has detected it. PASSPORT 9500ci The PASSPORT 9500ci is the ultimate custom-installed radar and laser defense system. With blistering all-band radar protection and precise laser "shifting" technology, speeding tickets can be a thing of the past. ESCORT continues to lead the industry by incorporating its patented GPS technology that automatically identifies the source and location of all radar signals. Real threats are processed in less than a second, while false signals are learned and eliminated. Now all you have to do is drive! The PASSPORT 9500ci is completely undetectable to all radar detector detectors, keeping you unseen and unnoticed. Crystal-Clear Voice Alerts, Speed Alert™, Safety Warning System and its stealth installation make the PASSPORT 9500ci the ultimate in discreet protection.
