I own a 1999 au wagon and would like to know what brand and type of tyre is the best to stop road noise?

You should ask this question in the 'Tyre & Wheel' technical section of the forums - turbo_nick would be able to give you a better answer than most of us!!!
What I will say is generally speaking (or at least that's the way they're marketed), tyres with silica compounds tend to be less noisy than non-silica compound tyres....that's what I've been led to believe....

Choose a NON directional tire also.
But it will also depend on the size of tyre your after as well as your budget.

i don`t know if its right but to my thinking big chunky blocks slapping themselves into the tarmac can`t be good, i usually try for tread that has smallish blocks if possible and largeish water ducts that run front of the car to back if that makes any sence, have no proof it makes any difference though .
