Default Mobile Soda Blasting Whats It Worth Brissy

Hi I'm wondering what it would cost to get a Car soda blasted at home and the mess associated with it (BRISBANE).
What damage /warpage can happen to panels and rust issues (IF Any) later on in life as can happen with sand blasting.
Do you need to prime straight away.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.

hi,im doing a resto on a lh torana for a customer atm and the owner had it soda blasted.
we ended up getting it sand blated after the soda blasting as the bloke who did it, did a terrible job and left paint, sealer, surface rust, and residue behind and just made a mess of the whole thing.so make sure who does it knows what they are doing.

be very carefull,
i know of three cars personally around Hervey Bay that had bonnets ruined by soda blasting,
Unfortunatly everyone thinks Soda is the safe way of stripping cars, like days of old there were good sandblasters and there were bad, today is no different, if you get a bad one they will destroy your panels, two of the bonnets ive seen ,you could actually see where the reinforcing strips /frame was underneath as the top was pushed down enough to have the frame clearly seen impressed into panel. mate just finished his Pontiac Transam,in Toowoomba early this year and its won a few trophies down that way since , but he spent 5 whole days fixing bonnet after Soda blaster spent 5 minutes on it.Dave was not a happy man with soda blaster.

Hey guys, even though this is an old discussion I thought it best we clear up the previous comments.

"i know of three cars personally around Hervey Bay that had bonnets ruined by soda blasting,

I run a Soda and Abrasive Blasting company in Hervey Bay QLD. In 2010 when this post was made there was another company servicing the area but in both our defence there is No Way that the Soda Blasting process can Damage a bonnet or any other metal part or panel.

1. The BiCarb Soda Media is only 2.4 on the hardness scale, there for anything harder than 2.4 cannot be damaged by the Soda.. it will simply turn to dust on impact.
2. there is No Heat in the Soda Blasting process, therfore there is no expansion, shrinking or warping of the metal.
3.If however the blaster used a different media Sand-Garnet-copper slag- Glass-etc.. there is a strong chance that the metal will get heated and upon cooling it will cool at different rates across the different layers of the bonnet. eg. the skin of the bonnet will cool quicker than the area where the skin touches the Frame. This will cause the warping. I know this because I had 1 customer "demand" that we lightly blast the underside of a RX3 Mazda bonnet with glass bead to remove the spiders of rust (Remembering the Soda Blasting will remove even the toughest of coatings but due to the softness of the particle it WILL NOT REMOVE RUST OR METAL). As expected after a light whip blast with Glass bead there was areas between the frame that had warped due to the cooling.
4. in the 5years since we have not had a section of any vechicle damaged or warped by Soda Blasting or by the use of Abrasive Blasting on the areas of the car that can safely be done. we do a Combo Blast on all restos unless the customer has requested we use 100% Soda Blasting.

If you or anyone has any questions on Soda or abrasive Blasting please feel free to give me a call on 0741946660 at Soda Blast Fraser Coast and I'll be happy to answer what i can.

P.s I didnt just join to have my say. I have used your forums for years while building my XY Sedan. a wealth of knowledge is a wonderful thing. I'll be posting again soon with a few questions. Cheers, Scott

Hey Arnaldo,

no mate it will remove 2cm think of concrete bitumen, paint, Bog, grease, grime, carbon, and a thousand other Coatings but it will not break the surface of the metal.. and that means it will not remove the oxidised metal (Rust). Soda Blasting can also remove the same coatings from a sheet of glass without damage to the glass.

that why we do a combo blast, we use a light abrasive on the solid parts of the car (these are the areas where most rust is) Door jams, round the screens gutters, sills, floor, etc.. and then we finish off with Soda on the softer areas.. Rear 1/4's Roof Door Skins, Bonnet, Boot.

If there is surface rust in these areas they just require a light sand. best way to ensure nothing is warped or damaged.
