After some time I've decided on buying a ba falcon ute to replace my current Nissan patrol ute. I'm looking at spending about 10 to 15 grand on a ute. Will want tray back so I can make my own tool box/ fridge box and dog cage on it. Just after some rough ideas of the fuel economy from the 4ltr 6 with 4 speed auto compared to the 5.4ltr v8 with 4 auto. I will be doing about 50km a week city driving 50 a week highway to and from work. Plus an 900 km trip every 3 or 6 weeks. My old Ef I used to have around town was about 14ltr per hundred and about 10 ltr per hundred on the highway was a 5 ltr v8 with 4 speed auto. How big is the difference between the never 6 to the 8 on fuel.

Hi there mate, I can confidently give feed back on the auto 4Lt as thats my Mrs car. Not the best thing in the world on fuel in town. Looking at around mid to high 13L to every 100kms but on the highway its something else. I bought it for her from QLD and drove it back down to Sydney and obviously a long long drive but I managed to get the thing down to 8.9L to every 100kms. Wasnt easy but I was proud of myself...
Depending how you drive aswel, it is not impossible for the thing to break into the 14s and even 15 something to every 100kms. Just got to be gentle... In my experience aswel. I dont know how much this means to you, but stock for stock, there actually isnt a sensational amount of difference in performance between the 6 & 8 in the 4 spd Autos. I though this was just the ones I have driven but only a few weeks ago a beautiful Force 8 was beside us and at the lights gave it a little squirt and it didnt get away to far. And mind you there the 6 spd I think..... But if you not fussed about performance then go the 8 if anything, for the meer sound of it!

Coming from a patrol I wouldn't be worried.... If your petrol sorry patrol is a petrol model, what ever you buy will be like a hybrid in comparison

I get about 21.5 lt/100km out of my RTV with the quad cam in it (almost identical to the 3 valve fitted previously) thats pretty much all stop start city driving, fully loaded, (and driving for economy is against my religion).
As a comparision one of my employees drives a BA one tonner straight 6 on petrol, carrying similar weight (with a similar driving style) and gets 22 lt/100km. Why the hell anyone bothers with a 6 is beyond me :-)

I had a BA ute with a 3V 5.4 and 4 spd Auto.
It was a styleside with a hard-lid and never carried a load, (OK a spare tyre once LOL). Anyway being use to the TS the thing was fantastic 12~14 around town, usually at the lower end of that and 10's on country running. Quick smooth and relatively frugal. How it performs loaded I cant tell you, but the V8 gets my vote. A pic below for old times sake.

6 is bullet proof, the 3 valve V8 is a mongrel when doing things like spark plugs; genuine ford are around 80 bucks each plug. Then there's the ones where you try to remove the old plugs only to find some of them snap and if you haven't got the right removal tool, you have to take the heads off.
Then there's the timing chain guides which chew up and are a costly repair if out of warranty. Then there's those getting higher in the mileage which haven't been maintained properly and end up with heat problems, knocks and other miscellaneous things to annoy. Don't take my word for it though, speak to anyone who regularly works on them. My advice, go the 6 or at the very least, get a 4 valve Boss motor which atleast gets you away from the stupid plug design.

V8 and economy should not be used in the same sentence.
It's all about the driving..... Anyway let's do some maths. Assumptions.. difference between the I6 and V8 is 4l/100kms. you do 1,000kms a month, 12,000kms a year. petrol is $1.20 a litre Your increase in fuel cost of the V8 over the I6 over 12 months is $576, or about $10 a week. Harden up, grab the V8 |

Is it the xr8s that have the 4v heads and the xl utes that have the 3v heads. Or is the 4v head v8 an option in all utes.
