Fitting Turbo, What else?

Im thinking of putting on a turbo to my Au Fairmont...

I understand this would put alot of stress on the car, so what else should i consider upgrading while im doing this, eg, suspension, brakes etc..

At a minimum, a service, flush, big trans cooler, and a shift kit for the auto. Id upgrade the brakes too. Do the S2-3 conversion, then the FTG 322mm upgrade. It would coast around 1k but it would be well worth it. And some slotted rears and good pads.
Diff should be fine, but you might want to throw in a LOKKA. About $700 fitted, and will hel pa lot with traction.

Fuel pump. Injectors, tune, etc etc. All depends on how much u wanna run. Strengthening the engine isn't a bad idea either

If you are going for a low boost kit, then the car should handle it fine. Best thing you can do for longevity is get a tune that feeds in the power slowly between 1500 and 3000rpm, but by then is pretty much on full boost. This will help most components survive a little longer.

Doing your research on this is critical. A lot needs to be considered and its isn't just a matter of throw on a turbo kit and be done with it.

What is the main purpose of the car? Street? Race? Drag? circuit?

How do you drive your car? Soft? Hard? Grandpa? Thrasher?

How big is your ongoing budget?
Dont just think once the turbo kit goes on there is nothing else you need to spend money on. Things will eventually need to be replaced or upgraded. Will you be able to fund the ongoing costs involved with the maintenance of a boost in general?

What kind of power do you want to achieve?
Will you be 'happy' with minimal boost for longevity? Or do you plan on going silly?

Are you handy with a spanner? Do you know someone who can tune the car for your at a good rate?

Last but definitely not least, what is your initial budget outlay?
I hear alot of people say they can do turbo conversions for some crazy low budgets only to end forking out over double due to taking short cuts and not realizing the miscellaneous items required to continuously maintain the car. Don't be fooled, be realistic.

Im not trying to turn you off boosting your car. On the contrary, I am forewarning those who are contemplating it to be fully aware of what lays ahead. If you intend on getting the car engineered, road worthied and insured, add more funds again. What can turn out to be fun initially can be a huge money pit for some who are not prepared.

If you are totally aware of the above and still wish to continue, then I reckon it would be in your best interest to look at a turbo kit from snort as they come complete to get the car running with low boost. probably best bang for buck kit available on the market for aftermarket for applications.

Yeah, ill be doing the service before hand. I wont need a trans cooler as its a manual and ive already done the brake upgrade (but will be putting new rotors and pads on it.

Ive got an LSD that im planning on putting in, that wouldnt cause any problems right?

As for an engeneer, where would i look to find one, Im in SA if anyone knows of anyone

LSD will be fine for street duties. But if you intend to drag it, then a LOKKA is recommended for some reliability.

Tonkin Consulting in Kent Town does vehicle engineering. But be warned, it's not a cheap process.

If its a T5 save up for a T56.

I'd go a 6boost t04z or gt35r kit. External gate. 3 / 3.5 inch exhaust with a good cat, a good intercooler, bigger injectors, bosch 023 fuel pump in the tank, XR6T fuel reg, flash tune with a 2 bar map sensor or use a J3 and get someone who knows what they are doing to tune it.

Probably wouldnt hurt to have valve springs and a decent cam. Run it until the bottom end falls out then build an engine with forged rods and pistons.

You'd probably want a better clutch for your T5 in the meantime too.

Can you run a J3 in an AU? I was under the impression it was an e-series option only.

To hit too birds with one stone Cadge, go speak to Bruce Heinrich about an xr6 turbo conversion to the AU. I have been told for him to put in a low miler xr6 turbo motor into my car, drive in and drive away with a basic tune fo 250rwkw is 7-8k. That would be a far better platform to work off from there should you want more power.

If you can afford to spend $7-8k straight up then an XR6T motor would be the best choice imo.

But it would have to be asked why you wouldnt sell you AU for $4-5K and spend the $7-$8k mod money and buy a BA.

I need to upgrade from my xcal1 capa flash tuner pretty soon. Seeings as TI Performance do J3's to suit AU's, Im going to look at this option. I have read on their site that you can switch between tunes on the fly without having to stop the engine. Flamin brilliant if this is the case.
