Default Bathurst Saloon Car Race

Anyone heard of the Bathurst Saloon Car Race, saw a video of some AU's, EA's VT's and even a Magna getting it on at bathurst. They sounded like 6 cylinders. Why can't they replace the overcommercialised V8 supercars with actual road cars.. like the current ford/holden range

Probably because no-one would watch it. There has been production car racing for several years (I believe it took a break for a couple) but still doesn't attract crowds.

Things were going ok for the championship until they started letting the 'exotics' and 'prototypes' in. It killed Procar.

I was following procar's Showroom Showdown series. i don't there were enough viewers to survive. plus the tv network didn't have it broadcast consistently (times and days). but at the end of the day, V8 supercar supporters didn't jump across to it, despite all their whinging about V8s.

they should stop v8supercars and put all the drivers and sponsors into real cars.

Then the supporters have no option to switch over as there would be no v8supercars.

I would watch that. I cant be bothered with v8supercars... its rubbish.

I know about the Saloon car series where they race 6-cylinder VT Commodores and AU Falcons as well as the odd EA. I've never seen Magnas in that category though.

There have always been many different production car racing categories in Australia as part of the Shannons Nationals, such as Saloon cars, 3.3L Holdens, etc. Their races are usually shown on Speedweek on SBS. It's quite enjoyable to watch if you're sick of V8 Supercars and would like to see production cars instead.

This is their website http://www.thenationals.com.au/

They do. Usually on SBS Speedweek. This Sunday they will be showing the Shannons Nationals from Wakefield Park a few weeks ago.
To the OP.... There is no Magnas in Saloon cars category, Its strictly Ford & Holden
Check it out http://www.salooncars.net.au/

We are doing the final touches to our entry as we speak. You know its close when the stickers are going on. Bathurst festival at Easter is the next event for us. Unfortunately its not a National round, but we always have a good time at the mountain.
Tomorrows job is to install the radio, then we run the diff in on Sunday at the local track

Haha, I watched the low quality video again and the 'Magna' was actually a VT/VX with a dicky S-pack spoiler, monaro taillights and silver painted rear bar. Mistook it for a Magna sport

Ah, you mean like it used to be before V8SC took over and did a Bernie Ecclestone to Australian motor racing.

Yes. It needs to go back to what it was. At least then the manu's were competing with each other. Making their cars better to compete. Now they don't sharpen their cars up for anyone.

i wish instead of going into car of the future they should have slowly started moving the series back towards the road going models. eventually with similiar setups and racing like the utes. WOULD BE AWESOME........

I was watching the last part of the Wakefield park event on the live stream and they kept referring to a commodore as a Monaro??

Was a VT or VX, definately had four doors though.

Agreed. But that dirty word 'parity' will rear its head again at some point.

For those who are sick of V8SC and would much rather see production car racing with more than just 2 manufactures, the Australian Manufactures Championship is just for you... http://www.thenationals.com.au/Austr...ampionship.php

I haven't sat down and watched Bathurst for many years now...I used to sit down religiously every year and watch it start to finish, but no more.
"Oh look, a Commodore...followed by a Falcon...and another Falcon...and gee whiz, another Commodore!" Boring as batshite. Hell, the cars now only happen to look a bit like Commodores and Falcons...underneath they bear practically no resemblance to the factory vehicles.

Give us the old days of a dozen different manufacturers from all over the world, using all different classes of engine size, with no idea who or what would win the race or what would occur to cause a big upset! Now that was racing...

Hell, in the old days, big cubic inches was no outright gaurantee of a win...after all, it ain't the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog...

A few years back some Japanese manufacturer (I seem to remember it was Toyota or Mitsubishi) wanted to get in on the race at Bathurst, and the angry reply was words to the effect that: "We've built this formula up from the ground and we're buggered if some blow-in is going to steal our thunder". In other words "We got burned bad by the staggering technological superiority of the Godzilla Skylines, and we're afraid the mob on the hill will go into collective shock if someone shows that there are other ways to get power besides a big V8..."

I lost interest in NASCAR.........ummmmm I mean V8SC a long time ago. It annoys the crap outta me when I hear bogans chant Ford or Holden won and have digs at each other about it, alot of them have no clue.

If Ford and Holden just imported Mustang and Camaro here we could
have better international racing against Asia, Europe and North America.

Get people out of sedans and back into coupes for racing....

I wouldn't understand how another manufacturer would want to enter the Bathurst 1000 since V8SC are essentially a spec racing category, it would be like trying to enter a GT car into a hatchback racing series. A few years ago Nissan wanted to enter the GTR in the Bathurst 1000 which to me doesn't make sense, there's already a category just for the GTR in Australia - it's called the Australian GT Championship.

As much as i love the old cars the racing could get quite boring. If a manufacturer built an absolute weapon and it would just dominate for ages making for quite boring races. It led to the supercar scare and eventually people whinging that there was no parity, which is weird because when ford was getting dominated for a while what did people want? Parity! Now we seem to be whinging the cars are too much alike!

I too wish we had the old style of racing sometimes but i think people tend to overlook the negatives back in the day.

I don't see too much harm being done by car of the future. If cars become almost identical it can't be too bad, nascar is exciting as hell at the moment and they run almost identical cars.

Hell yeh sounds good, the last couple good moments I remember was at Bathurst 2005 road rage between Ambrose and Murphy, then more road rage between Ingall and Skaife after Ingall shunted him and slid him out (I forget what year/race that was though). Classic.
