Default FGII Falcon 'confirmed' to get EPAS

OK, maybe it's not a real confirm, it's an 'in line to get'. But the probably is sure firming up, thanks to the announcement that Nexteer is expanding in Australia to build and export EPAS systems.

Yeah my 07 Corolla has electric power steer and it's fantastic.

Sure it's not as light as the old 'one-pinkie' AU power steer, but you actually get a decent amount of steering feel.

I drove a new model VW golf with electric steer and self park

The steering was the worst I have seen in a car since I drove a powersteer XF no feel and super light, but I guess people don't want heavy steering otherwise that's what they'd make, I've owned 2 cars with electric assist steer and they were miles better...

The self park was great, I'd never use it other than to show mates the cool feature but it worked well unlike topgear style demos of it, I'd prefer people learn to drive and park but that will never happen so of this system makes it easy for the hopeless drivers out there, less time I have to wait in anger when someone goes in for their 4th attempt at a space

You do realise that is they did make a G8E it would be well into the $60ks if not low $70ksand not far under GT-E.

Or do you only want one if it is under $50k?

Back in April Kuzak said “we have committed to rolling EPS out across our entire portfolio only after we were convinced that it had good steering feel”. There's your confirmation right there.

sounds like a good thing, better fuel economy, one less device causeing drag on the motor, less noise, one less thing to leak oil, more safety items available , bring it on !!

We know that the FG will remain (fundamentally) unchanged from a styling point of view, but the changes under the skin have me deeply intrigued.

I wonder if the ZF will disappear and be replaced with the 6R80?

Assuming that its cheaper then I would say yes, the ZF came in before the 6R80 was available didnt it? Ford would want it internal for sure.

I wonder if there is any price difference for serving and parts, in theory there should be but who knows.

edit: Although I guess it also depends on what contract they had with ZF initially.

Not everyone wants a supercharger … actually while I love the sound of the original FG XR8, I hate the sound of the new supercharged v8s …

Also GS = XR bodykit and not GE bodykit …

And lastly the USA N/A V8 is so much nicer than what FPV have made it into, yes it does make a bit less power, but its lighter, revs to 7K rpm, sounds heaps better in the stang, more fuel efficient, uses new ECU that actually uses the full capabilities of the engine VS cutting the variable exhaust capability out due to FVP laziness …

to be fair, it remains to be seen if the coyote would be more fuel efficient in the heavier falcon, i doubt it myself.

I wonder if its only going to be for the Ecoboost models much like Territory only got it for the diesel. Would be a significant gesture i would imagine for the whole range to get it.

Not important for me at all, FG steers appreciably better than BF and actually steers superbly for a big lardy sedan. Certainly not something I would be prioritising as a plus reason to upgrade as a potential customer for FGII.

I think WS and WT are entirely electric power steering, not assist. Its great, use your little finger to turn the wheel very easily.

Just speculating, but I think we'll only see EPAS on EcoBoost models (and Coyote V8 if the XR8 is resurrected). We'll see it accross the Falcon range (and Territory) in 2013 when the inline six finally goes out of production.

Theres rumours going around that there will be an XR8 / G8E. Can't wait to watch all the G8E wannabes find some excuse as to why they are not going to buy one.. cough splutter cough...

I hope the contract is renewed, or goes for longer ; that way lower tier models could have the 6R80 and they could introduce the 8-speeder on G6E etc... Good way to increase sales in the premium sector, and better economies of scale for the 6R80 equipped models. Apparently it has the same bellhousing as the ZF6HP. Maybe they can use the 5-series calibration like they did with the 6 speed...

EPAS is available in all Territorys, not just diesels.

And the I6 will last till at least 2016.

I don't know about EPAS for Falcon this year, but someone else on here who would know reckoned it wasn't going to be fitted to the upgrade model.

It will get it at some point but probably not this time around.

It would be fitted across the range too, they won't just fit it for specific models. Easier to spread costs across the whole range.

My money would be on:

- No EPAS for FG11 (anyone considered if it would fit in with the performance arm)
- FG 11 not until next year
- Wouldn't be looking for much to change outside/inside/underneath other than front bar and touch screen

2014 may be worth waiting for.

2016 and beyond is, well, ...................................

There are FGII mules on the streets right now so it's not far off. Definitely before 2012. November on sale date is my guess.

I like this comment from Goauto:
Quote:
The EPS system on the Territory – and presumably the forthcoming Falcon facelift – was developed using the US-market Ford Mustang’s set-up as a starting base, but a Ford engineer told us “it is now unrecognisable from that”.
