11-12k to spend on hot hatch

As title suggests I'm looking at getting a little fun machine to complement the XR6T.

Must be under 100,000 klm

In the running at the moment are:

Peugeot 206 gti 180
Renault Clio sport 182

Will consider stretching the budget by a few k for a Mini Cooper S.

Any other suggestions ?

You could find a clean 205 GTi and have a LOT of money left over to mod/restore/upgrade

I think the 182 will win this hands down. Id also look at maybe an DC2 Type R aswell. Most are around the $15k mark for a good one but I reckon they would have room to move on that.

206 got fat IMO, and not phat.

I love my mrs's, beats vu-vz sv6's and its basically stock. Also gets 9litres per 100k's round town and 7.2 on the highway.

I like the performance of the 182 (0-100 in 7 flat) but the Cost of parts and build quality is a worrying.

XR4 handles great but definitely down on power. Also still quite expensive - they hold their value well.

See if you can get a DC2 Integra Type R, but you'd be looking at $15K, but its basically the best performance FWD car of its era, they have LSDs as well.

Actually id like to hear from anyone how has owned a DC2...what is the economy like? If you dont rev the bejesus out of it can they be ok?

Ive heard they dont mind a drink...how bad can they be?

As long as you have 5k rpm on the tacho all the time as a minimum the Integra could be called a hot hatch I suppose.

Ever driven a 206 GTi? At just a shade over 1000kg I would hardly call it fat.

Forget the 205, you'll spend more time fixing/replacing/swearing than driving. The GTi 180 is a good thing, mines the lowly 138 and it is an absolute ball to drive. I actually prefer the pug on the twisty stuff over the old XR8. Parts are cheap for them too, just order everything from the UK and your servicing costs are less than that of any of the locals.

Don't bother owning it if you plan on keeping it under 5000 RPM haha, thats when the fun starts.

When I was working at Honda, we where getting reports of around 15-20L/100km when keeping it on the ball from their owners.

Don't bother with the VTI-R version when you can have the lighter Type R.

I guess what i was getting at is that is it possible to drive "normally" with a DC2 and it not drink like a rotary or a V8..LOL You dont need to drive like a banshee 100% of the time..maybe 50/50..hehe..I heard the same, they suck it down with you get stuck into them. Which kind of defeats the purpose of getting a smaller car IMO.

RG, I knew you would reply to that, no mallace intended, but if your buying a hatch for the sole purpose of having fun and as a second car then why not go all out?

For pure connection the 205 is hard to beat, agreed it wont be cheap but you can buy them for less than $5k and have a considerable budget for fixing/modding so it will be as good as new anyway.

If you need it to be a daily then yeah, not a flash idea.

My mrs used to own a 206 GTI. Heaps of fun in the twisties but maintenence was a pain in the ***. Cam gears every 4 years or 80000km. I'd bet most for sale overlook this maintenence as its $1500 along with water pump and pulley they do at same time. Its just too expensive to service maintain and peugoet dealers charge ridiculous prices. For the age they will have niggling issues. But a fun car to drive, good looker.

I'd imagine clio to be worse as less around.

If your budget can stretch get a polo gti. Turbocharged 1.8, just apr tuned and they will give most cars the hurry up. The little turbos with tune only spike at 22psi in the mid range to level out to 17-18psi top end..

They handle ok and build quality is good. Only issue is I hear the turbo bolts need tightened here and there. Otherwise that's my pick

A DC2 is now a 10+ year old car....and not all of them were bought by true enthusiasts who looked after them, so tread with caution.

I'll go left field and throw in a Colt Ralliart - get an 06/07 and you'll get a neat little five door with recaros and 110kw stock - with turbo tunability.

One not far from me on carsales at the moment, one owner 60ks for 12k with 17's and the standard rims included.
Bit out of the ordinary but doesn't seem like bad value! The later models apparently made the recaros an option only, and they can be had for very good money.

Actually, HULK is onto another good thing in the Polo GTi - resale is pretty strong in good colours (white, silver, red), but I know of a blue one that keeps popping up on eBay that can't sell at 12k with 80ks.....agian, decent value. Try and find one that had the sunroof pack (roof and leather) - it was about $5k extra new!!

Was going to suggest this myself, great little car top build quality and a hoot to drive.
Running 22psi everyday isnt all that good for them though.

I had a VTIR for a year or so. 125kwatt and pretty light. I wanted a Civic VTIR originally, but I couldn't fit in it. The Integra had a little more headroom. It also had usable back seats, unlike the similar vintage Prelude.

It felt fast and made a great noise when the VTEC cam kicked in. I don't recall it being bad on fuel, it was actually very economical on the highway and comfy enough to go for a decent trip.

A Type R would most likely be more extreme, but the VTIR was a good daily driver.

SR20 / SP20? A bit under budget, leaves room for a few bits and pieces. Could also look at a WRX around 99. A few clean ones around that price can be had, but they're a bit bigger.

It's not a hot hatch so to speak but is a fun small car... Late 1980s BMW 325is, 1200kg, 170hp, LSD, 0-100 mid 7 secs. Bullet proof 1980s BMW build quality and reliability. You may struggle to find one under 100k but at the end of the day the overall condition is more important than mileage. There is a reason why the 3 series is the most successful sports toruing car.

Geez didn't realise they demand that sort of coin, haven't had much to do with those 318is but don't they rev to 7 grand?!... the 2.5 6 seems like it was a more popular choice when new, the I6 was from the 1970s and it still smoother than a barra dohc lol, sweet engines.

Spend $1500 on importing a FS-ZE 2L engine and ECU from NZ, which bolts up to the same gearbox, clutch and engine ancilliaries and you've got yourself something that makes 122KW power at 7200 RPM up from 90 odd the hopeless 2.0 FS-DE makes in the AUDM SP20.
