I just had a test drive of a 2004 N16 1.8 auto with 95k and full log book service history and besides being guttless it had a very loud engine which sounded like it had a lot of valve train noise or even piston slap.
Not knowing anything about Nissans I am not sure if this harsh sound is normal, car was well looked after otherwise. |

Normally a very quiet engine I'd steer clear of that one

A mate had one of these. Piece of rubbish, everything broke and Nissan admitted that his car wasnt "abnormal".
But the 80s ones had a decent engine but a rust bucket of a body.

Hi 4vxc,
I had the exact same Pulsar, (Except it was a 5spd Man), before upgrading to my 2009 FG. It never let me down not once, never had any issues, I actually sold it to my father-in-law & he loves it. However, the one you looked at sounds like rubbish though, they are failry quiet normally. I know Brooksy said his mates one was rubbish, but you get lemons at times with any cars really. Anyways, good luck with your search.

We had one in the family from new, it was a 1999 model hatch back. it did over 250,000km and it was still going strong, we didnt have a single issue with it. If i was after a small run about i would consider one since ours was reliable.

I own a '99 N15, and it hasn't been serviced in almost two years...doesn't come anywhere near sounding like it has 'piston slap' though. I've had mine for almost 8 years and never had any major problems - I just can't kill the thing no matter how hard I try...

I've got one at the moment (N16 1.8 auto) and its been in the family since 2006. Apart from overheating once due to a head gasket, the car has been fantastic. It's about to pass the 150k mark and it feels like its got another 150k in it at least.

As usual with Nissans, they're pretty hit and miss
