I had to do a Dump Run this morning, and this small dump truck pulled up beside me, I said, "nice truck you have there!" and I ended up taking a pic.



Apparently it's on it's second gearbox (19000 k's), because it crunches between gears. His guesstimate was 1000 crunches a day. The new gearbox is the same. It gets less than 350 k's out of a 65 litre tank of diesel.

The owner has a 1986 Ford Trader that will beat it from the lights by 150 metres to get to 60km/hr (similar engine size)

He said he plans to park it outside the dealers for the day, while he goes off to work on the wharfs every day.

He told me he preferred my trailer, as he wouldn't have had to pay 48 grand for it.

What a ******, someone is probably syphoning his gas, good on em, maybe he should of looked at an F250 or Cummins Dodge but he's probably the type who will never be satisfied.

Funny that they've been making great reliable trucks of all sizes for decades, and he's the one who gets a lemon...

We have Hino Rangers (4WD versions) at work and they are crap!

You have to double clutch in order to make smooth changes and its only a 5speed.

Your lucky to get to 100kmh when its empty (100 limited anyways).

One truck used to stop for no reason and it was traced back to the fuel tank set up (4 fuel tanks) and another would have its brake lights on all the time (fixed twice), but yes the crappy gear change drives anyone insane.

But not new Hinos. Not even 10 year old Hinos. Smells like driver error and a severe lack of test drive. Perhaps he needs to transplant a Boss 5.4 and 5 speed auto?

We have 5 Hino's in our fleet and all have over 500k km... All on original gearboxes and still going strong!

you can give him the benefit of the doubt, i`m not saying this is the case with him, but some people truly have bad co ordination and will never be able to drive anything but an Auto competently , also some of those little trucks with tiny diesel engines and short gearing need to be driven like a truck, i have a mate with an old dyna much the same.

Seriously, its either some bad manufacturing or some serious bad driving
Looking at the poor economy , im maybe leaning towards the later
350Ks from 65 L in a diesel ,thats worse than a stove hot 51 clevo

I should have mentioned, the owner said he was a mechanic by trade, so he knew when the the dealer was trying to 'cow poo' him. He wasn't a t0sser at all.

Our old fella at work who does our bus driving duties is hopeless in a manual , we have cruiser utes / coaster buses and he is responsible for - in the 6 years I have been here at least 3 gearboxes ( smashed gears ) and around a dozen clutches , he finds reverse while doing 50 60,km ... only last round he did the bus clutch again . I also do bus duties and never had a problem .and they still let him drive .

Hey it could be a lemon but I have my doubts , and the sign writing is a bit extreme .if its that bad cut ya losses , get them to buy it back and move on

Those little Hinos are garbage.

The bigger stuff is pretty good, but in that size he should of got a Fuso.
But even the bigger ones arnt any more reliable than a car, water pumps, clutch fans, exhaust brakes, worn seat bases all around 200k-300k in our ones.
They are shocking for wheel alignments too, some need the axles bent within 12 months.

These are full syncro and the handbook doesnt say you have to double clutch them.... these are a 5speed box, not a road ranger gearbox with 18 gears.

hi fell'as i drive concrete trucks and in our yard we have a Hino mini truck 6 speed manual it's ok drives like a car syncro boxes on trucks don't need to be double clutched these days but common mistake is to rush the gear changes it just canes the syncro's, I've been using syncro and non syncro for over 30 years and do driver training and assessments ....also it may be possible to have one crook gearbox but two.... i don't think so, The only other thing i can think of has the correct spec oil been added to the box ?

Brilliant, great truck. I've never driven the small 3 tonner though.

We got a new 3 ton hino just coming up 2 years old and 80,000km this December, so underpowered it's not funny, it will do 120 but sitting on 100 flat to the floor it only takes a slight rise to pull it back, when it's loaded it will be lucky to hit 100, scrubs tyres like a mothertrucker but it's solid axle songotta heat them and bend to align them. 350-400km is maximum range from the tank. Isuzu 3 toners can take 4 ton and do 120 all day and pull like a train compared to the hino

Yup 100% right! I had about a ton on the back one day and i barely got to 85kmh.... hill sections it was hopeless. Glad i dont drive one for a living.

Hino's Like Toyota's have a reputation (deservedly so) for being great reliable bits of gear.

However, late model Hino's, like modern Toyota's aint what they used to be.

My Canter is 4495 GVM on a car licence, it is always around that weight if not a bit more. It gets 600ks to a 80 litre tank. It has a 4.9lt intercooled turbo diesel in it and it fly's. My last Canter with a 4.0 litre turbo diesel got 650 ks to a tank, fully loaded. It done 250,000ks without putting a spanner on it before trading it in on the newer one. The brand new Canter that has just come out has gone back to a 3 litre motor supposedly with more power and better economy.......

I wonder how you quantify that? The time hasn't elapsed to prove this or not.
