Hi,
This might seem like a silly question but the only Falcons I have owned before this one (98 AU Fairmont, modern to me) was an XC and before that an XB and XA. Is it normal for a whirring sound from the engine after you have turned it off? Sort of sounds like a turbo winding down. Also, when its idling there is an intermittent sound that seems to be coming from inside the dash from the passenger side. Sort of sounds like the analogue clock tick but much louder, sort of a double clu-thunk I would have put it down to the climate control doing something except its not going at the time. Any ideas? Cheers. HG |

I get that same "whirring" / "winding down" sound as well on our 1999 AU. I've always wondered if it was normal or not, but I'm guess I'm not the only one!

Have you had a look under the bonnet to see if the fan is still spinning ?

The climate control sound might just be one of the blend door motors. Ie. for heat/cool or air circulation. If you sit idly and change around the air position (face/feet/demist) then there is a grinding noise which might be what you are hearing.

I will start and stop the motor cold and see if it still whirrs then.
I am not changing air position on the climate air,its off when this noise occurs, but that is the sort of noise it sounds like. I cannot tell if it does it while I am moving as its an AU1 and the cat converter has been removed so its a little throaty. |

OK,it does not do it cold and does appear to be the thermal fans.
I should have guessed that really, however they are suprisingly noisy from the drivers seat and always seem to be going when the engine is at normal operating temp, rather than cutting in and out as I would have expected. I have just replaced the climate control unit with a reco unit today and the strange noise from the dash seems to have gone, hopefully. I did notice there is a filter in the hose that clips onto the back of the climate control unit, this was chocker full of dust which I cleaned out.Not sure if thats something to do with it. One other question, the fuel flap light is always on the dash . I see there is a sensor fitted to the car body and a metal braket on the fuel flap.Am I correct in assuming something is missing off this bracket? Cheers, HG. |

sometimes you will get noises from vacuum operated flaps and heater controls from behind the dash as Block58 has mentioned, my flaps make a noise as the vacuum builds up or depletes after the engine is shutdown or started at times.

Both my AUs make this noise, neither have CC.
I'd guess at the thermos too, but it does it every time I turn the cars off, whether hot or not so. What could it be other than thermos? Interesting thought. When you disconnect and reconnect the battery, you can hear the ECU powering up. I wonder if it could be a similar thing? In any case, the sound is not indicative of any problem. GK

Been thinking more about all this.
I reckon the others are right, it's probably the thermo fans, but coming off low speed, not high. GK

Yup its the thermo fans.
Thing is,are they not supposed to cut in and out according to water temp? Seems mine stay on from even before the temp gauge reaches normal. The other noise is something to do with the climate control,as it does it when I turn it off or on as well. But it also does it most of the time as well irrespective of whether or not climate control is on.Drives me nuts, any ideas? |
