Backyard mechanic problem #2.

I am trying to re-install my mechanical fuel pump from the Pinto 2 litre but it seems like a part is missing as it just will not pump. Is there a secondary pushrod that is needed apart from the spring-rod attached to the fuel pump itself? I ask this because when bolting the pump on, there is just no way that the sprung rod can reach the auxillary shaft lobe that is supposed to push it.

Have I lost a small pushrod extension piece or something? . I definitely have plenty of fuel available and the pump is in good working order.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I am about to go and spend another $100.00 on an electric fuel pump just from the frustration of trying a million times with no result.

Yes, you are missing a pushrod that sleeves into the block and runs of a lobe on the auxilary shaft

Thanking you very much Jim, what a relief. I thought I was going mad. So obviously when I stripped the motor down the rod must have fallen to the side and I have completely missed it when cleaning up.

Time to chase one of these down!

So I went to strip down my old Pinto the other day. I had it sitting on a dollie with a section of rug underneath to catch any oil. Guess what was folded up inside a crease in the rug?

Yes, the original pushrod

Been there, done that - that's pretty much how I found about about the little beastie when I did the first rebuild of the RS engine few decades ago....
