Meanwhile, another New South Wales driver had his car impounded after being caught doing 177 kilometres an hour on the Hume Freeway last night.

The 17-year-old P-plater told police he was speeding because his car was running out of petrol.

had to get to a servo before it ran out of petrol. makes sense to me. perhapes the servo was going to close before he got there if he did 100kmh. ;)

I doubt that the P plater was actually doing this but in the late sixties a trial was done to find out the most economical way to drive a car and the best results were to accelerate to 100mph and then turn the engine off and coast until you almost come to a stop. Start the engine and repeat the process again over and over. This works well on reasonably flat land.

I had to do it once out of necessity myself between Rockhampton and Mackay years ago in a Rambler Rebel and it is surprising how far you can go with this method.

A strange observation, at the servo I regularly see p platers stop and put $5 -10 fuel in their cars, that's between 3-7 litres of fuel. By the time they get home they gotta turn back around and come get more fuel. But they will buy a pack of smokes.

I think it's a mentality of not thinking for any adverse conditions, no margin for error.

I've seen that too in service stations...they'll spend $20 for a pack of fags, and at the same time put $10 worth of fuel in the car...

Some young guy actually died trying to do that a couple of years back. Switched the car off and let it coast, but didn't know his power steering would die when he turned the engine off. He struggled to control the car and ended up going into a tree.

I used to go to work where there was a downhill stretch over a km long. Every morning there was traffic so a lot of cars would turn off the car and coast in neutral.... would keep pressing the brake and then after a while the pedal would get rock hard. Turn on the car while rolling with a rock hard pedal and the nose would dive to the road once the hydraulics came back...

As for economical driving. From what I found the highest gear with the lowest revs to stop the car stalling / pinging will return the best economy.

Anyway... 1 less twat on the road.

I've heard similar, but he actually turned the key ALL THE WAY off and steering lock engaged. Would have crashed in seconds.

You could do that in a manual car, engine off in a high gear and use the engine braking to slow the car instead of foot brake, that way if you do need foot brake it should still work. power steering on most cars too maybe??
