I work on the edges of the publishing industry and I keep hearing rumours that a new car magazine is coming to Australia. I have no more details other than it's an established title from OS. So, is it Car, Motor Trend (which has an Aussie editor), Automobile, Car&Driver etc?
Hope it's true so Motor, Wheels and Top Gear Australia are forced to lift their game. |

Cheap imported magazines will have more features that buyers want.
Australian made motoring magazines are too outdated and not relevant any more, their quality has degraded, and they don't have enough brand cache. Driving Australian magazines out of business due to low import tariffs and excessive competition seems just about fair enough for an industry that seems to have whole heartedly abandoned support for local auto manufacturers. Hoping it's either EVO or Octane. Initial price for both of these are way to expensive to justify the purchase, but usually come down after a month or so.

the only car mag i buy is Australian Muscle Car. it's been fresh and new since it started, but i get the feeling they've pretty much covered all there is of early australian cars.

I actually subscribe to Wheels.
I'm a sucker for spy shots and the full coverage it gives to the new Australian models....however, It really has become 'Holden Monthly' in the last 10 years or so with the annual Holden calender, dvd's and the like. For those who criticize the online media about 'Falcon bashing', they really need to pick up a issue of Wheels. Whether it be a editorial,a future news report or foreign car show coverage the Falcon is already dead in their eyes and they have no problem about publishing their unfounded views and speculation. A new magazine that gives fair coverage to all domestic models may be a breath of fresh air. |

I subscribe to Two Wheels and Top Gear..read Wheels from the library..
We do need an unbiased car magazine, a magazine that favours no one and is honest about the car...

I subscribe to Motor and Top Gear, but I'd be happy to add another subscription if Evo or Octane became a bit more affordable.

Every magazine should use Perth Street Car as the bench mark.
From what Ive seen and read, and Ive bought several hundred mags in the past 25 years, nothing else in Australia comes close. I haven't bought a car magazine (other than the afforementioned) for over 12 months.

AMC is still pretty good but I must admit I prefer Mark Oastler as editor and Joe Kenwright instead of Paul Gover.

A new car mag on the shelves would be nice [if its good], AMC is great, hopefully the new editor can keep pace and not fill it with cushion stuffing, lately its just full of whats happening in the holden world and i feel that theyre trying to kick off interest in lesser known muscle cars for people to ride the next sales boom. Naturally theres prob gonna be more stories on EB/EL GT's/ TICKFORDS soon enough and probably some VN HDT's or post Brock hero cars [Clubsports/HSV's] [since theyve pretty much covered everything pre 80's].
I religiously buy Muscle car review, a yank mag you can have for the low price of $13 lol, full of lots of car show coverages, barn finds, restos/owner stories, diy's and new products etc. i try to find mopar muscle or mopar action where possible too. great reads for the plane flights i do weekly. |

Octane and early issues of AMC are the two best mags ever. Wheels and Motor take about 2 hrs to read, pox.

Yes, he's the current editor. I should have said "preferred" Mark Oastler as he was the founding editor.

I've got a 3 year subscription to Diesel Power magazine, which is pretty much Ford F series, Chevy/GMC Silverado/Sierra and Dodge RAM diesel technology.
Big magazine with lots of content, unfortunately lots of advertising too. |

Good guess but I haven't got two cents to rub together to start a publsihing venture. And my mate who used to work at Wheels already has another gig. I do know that two more Wheels staffers have quit recently taking the total to 6 of 9 staff in four months. And the editor or Motor has moved to Drive. My mail is the new mag is either Evo or Octane. |

barra240t I agree with you new car news is on the net daily. But a book/magazine is like a woman, you miss the tactile feel.of the paper..just something about holding a magazine..

Magazines that come in paper form are on their way out as well, as with most things the path of least resistance has been chosen. Why walk, or drive, down to the newsagent when you can just download the latest issue? Personally, I like to go to the newsagents and peruse what is available before purchasing it. Then again, I prefer swap meets over EBay, and getting together in person with other automanics, rather than on Facebook. So I am more from the old school when it comes to these things.

I borrow from the local library ifI want to read a car mag these days usually Wheels or Top Gear thing is I think their coverage of high end cars is a bit OTT not much for the average man in the street so I think we need something that is aimed at the more affordable sector of the market instead of all these Multi hundreds of thousand dollar cars they keep doing write ups on !

AMC mag seems to now be more about the historic racing scene than the cars unfortunately.. the previous editor seemed to do a very good/thorough job of researching the actual cars and details. It's a shame, because there is so much else they could be doing with the magazine in terms of articles actually about musclecars...
