Default Ford and GM to cooperate in Auto Gearboxes

Automotive News reports they plan to cooperate in the production of 9 and 10 speed automatic gearboxes for both RWD and FWD.

Imagine a truly modular car, pick a body with your desired suspension, pick an engine, gearbox, interior. Sorry just woke from a dream. couldnt you do all that in the past?

Anyways the more common the boxes and engines get the cheaper cars should become, step in the right direction, i would put money on them not being interchangable though.

Each will programme them for their balance of performance /economy it seems, which is logical enough.

Good idea, though I do remember hearing about this a couple of years back.
Anyway it is a good way to spread the R&D costs with only small customisations for each organisations requirements.

9 and 10 speed? The point of more and more ratios is, as I understand it, is to keep the engine humming along in a narrow (and most efficient) rev range while the many gear ratios almost seamlessly change up and down without you noticing.

Oh come on...it gets to a stage where you just say "put a properly calibrated CVT in it and be done with it...".

I doubt engineers would sign off on a CVT in a powerful car which would have to be designed for heavy towing.

CVT is rubbish anyway and a lot of people hate it. It cannot be engineered for high torque either, 300nm was about the limit a few years ago and I don't think it's progressed much beyond that.

Cvt is crap.
Why don't they just buy them in, join together and fit the zf to everything !
Bigger buying power.

Manufacturers used to use "generic" auto boxes from outside makers...look at the massive range of vehicles not only from Australia but around different overseas manufacturers that used the BW35 auto box.

most do understand that they have limitations in regards to torque and towing . might be good for little buzz boxes but no good for larger cars and SUVs
