Question Will we get the ZF 8HP in '14?

The government funding manifesto states 'improved 6 speed autos' but surely this doesn't strictly mean no 8 speeds will be included?
I say this because:

a) the economy of scale must have brought it down to the same price as the 6 speed, now several other manufacturers like Chrysler have adopted it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_8HP_transmission Look at the huge number of current users.

b) the original 6HP didn't need any calibration from BMW 5-series parameters, so not much tuning/ development was required

c) There was only 3 or 4 years that Falcon adopted the 6HP after it's debut in the BMW E65 7-series, it will have been 6 years of the 8 speed being around in 2014.

What do you reckon, an outside chance Ford will adopt it if it's easy to do? Or are mechanical upgrades going to be kept to a minimum and the 5-7% improvements in economy and aero as stated?

You must live under a rock, the falcon will not be around after 2016. No point spending money when theyre closing down

You must live under a pebble, They are upgrading it in 2014 and those upgrades aren't free. It was a legitimate question.

The additional costs involved to bung in the 8 speed far outweight the wholesale cost of the unit. R&D, testing, calibration, compliance with regulations, skilling service technicians to work on them, stocking parts etc etc etc etc etc etc.

And that will not be recouped in the few remaining years the model will run.

So, not a snow balls chance in hell.

If the Falcon has new body panels and three new colours, consider yourself lucky.

Be good if they did a historical colour palette and bring back all the best colours over the years : Vermillion Fire, Toxic, Blueprint, Fantasy, some of the wild pinks and greens from the 70's...

Yeah makes sense, but wouldn't they be doing that with the updated 6 speed anyway? ( Which I assume is the higher spec one in Jaguars with rev-matching etc)

Doubt it. Any updated model will probably have the existing 6sp with some minor tweaks by software / shift points etc etc.

Every cent saved from this point forward will be money in the bank for Ford. They won't be investing in anything new or un-necessary for a model that has no future prospects IMO.
