Default Is there a better sounding V8 than a Cleveland?

If there is I haven't heard it! The latest V8's sound ok and make a heaps of power but don't have that sweet rumble of a Cleveland, wack in a cam and its game over! Be interested in what others think.

Perhaps has a bit to do with the giant carb on the top aswell?

I dont have any particular favorite. The 'lil 302C I had sounded great (like WW3 was about to start), now my 302W EFI also sounds pretty good.

I also like the sound of a high revving small euro and the burble of a BB.

Sound of an engine is related to the looks, it is all based on people's personal taste.
I agree the Cleveland sounds good but then I also love the sound of AMG's 6.2 Litre V8, the V8 powering the Maserati GT and the little V8 in the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. When the exhaust flap is opened up to let the full sound of these...oh my!!!

Locally the 5.0 s/c V8 and the HSV's sound pretty tough too.

Adding mods to any of these engines will make them sound better too.

I have to agree with you on this one. I’ve heard quiet a few of these with the taps opened up and the sound is unbelievable.

I've heard fantastic sounds from both Clevo's and Windsors, plus many other engines.

Personally I think the exhaust system has a larger bearing on the sound than the type of engine. Assuming they're all the same amount of cylinders, of course.

This is the best sounding Clevo ever IMO.
I saw this run, and plenty others live back in the early 80's...

As others have mentioned a 6.2 Merc (every time the guy at work leaves he can't help himself and hammers it to get a reaction).
The Windsor in the FTE TS/E50's.
The old 5.3 V12 in the XJS Jags when they are working was sweet.

You can name numerous Lambo's / Ferraris, but they are out of this world cars and not for commoners like myself.

I heard a New Lambo Aventador V12 hammering it in 1st gear that around the Yarra River in Melbourne, that was panty dropping niceness.

Any of the low capacity V8s from early Formula cars, also the Mercedes SLR jusr sounds so damn good, like they've harnessed all the sounds of war into an engine

True it’s hard to beat the sound of a Cleveland but there are plenty of other makes that have hit great notes as well.

The 6.2litre AMG as already mentioned by a few members is one of my big favourites, as is the old school sound of the Holden 308/304 and now that bimodal exhausts are common place some of the new high end performance cars are a glory to listen too.

It does, which is why IMO Miami/Coyotes sound a bit average.

For an old school sound I can't go past a Rover V8.

Some of the newer V8s have a great high end growl. But the sound of a Cleveland at lower RPM sounds great too.
Listen to the sound of this XY GT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kpEmcuYXak

I've never heard a carby Windsor sound quite the same as a Cleveland. Most of them have a terrible whistle sound like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5x14wfOYvs Anyone know what causes that?

It does, that's why I said the exhaust has a larger bearing on the sound, meaning the the firing also plays a part, but not as big as the exhaust, IMO.

We all have our opinions.

Having owned many old school V8’s and newer models with exhaust mods I’d have to disagree.
Firing order makes a bigger difference for me as I love the sound of old school Fords and Holdens over the new models.

Still that why we are posting in this thread because different engines and their sounds appeal to different folk.

One of the sweetest sounding engines I ever heard was actually a big port 427 in a HG Monaro, powerglide with 3,000 stall and 3.5 gears..

Firing order makes an enormous difference if we have only open headers.

Fit cats, long pipes, balance pipes, and a few mufflers, and the exhaust becomes the dominant thing as it's masking the firing order to some extent.

Don't forget a significant difference to the sound of old school and modern is the existence of cats in post 86 cars, cats happen to be a part of the exhaust.

I've found the quieter the exhaust, the more it plays a part in how an engine sounds.
