Default 86 buyers to flock to new WRX?

I believe with looks like this & performance to match, a few Toyota 86 (& possibly some BRZ) owners will be selling up to get their butts into this.
Your thoughts......

I don't really think the WRX and 86 are in the same market. One is a RWD 2 door sports car (with not a lot of power), the other is a AWD 4 door rocket.

Also the 86 can be had for just under $30K. The new WRX will be at least $40K or more.

But if someone is just buying a car for looks, then sure some 86 owners may get a new WRX.

I see two types of 86 drivers: those who drive them like Corollas; and those who think their cars are faster than they really are. I don't think a lot of them would be in the market for a WRX, which in my opinion appeals to a harder core, more enthusiast type driver.

Like that concept but Subie will need to translate that into the production Rex.

MY15 model should be the all new one. The MY14 will be a face lifted model if these pics are anything to go by http://www.motoring.com.au/news/2013...2014-wrx-36136

It looks like it might have some similarity in the front to the concept but until the camo is removed who knows.

Hit the nail on the head there- from what I've experienced it seems like almost the majority of 86/BRZ drivers think they are much faster than they are. The amount of them that have tried to go me off the lights, on the roll etc is ridiculous. The 86 is a fine car but no speed demon, I think some owners are struggling to understand this and a WRX would really appeal to them. Better yet, a WRX motor in an 86, perfect.

Think your very wrong and you wish a FWD had dynamics like a 86.

Sound just like WRX drivers actually, if we are going to stereotype...We do a lot of work for a elderly dentist who owns a WRX. In fact, most WRX's I see are just driven by normal everyday people, its no longer a wannabe WRC drivers car, that's what the STI (or an EVO) is for.

Maybe so, but that is a totally different argument. If I were going away from FWD, I'd prefer AWD over RWD.

Yeah most of the 86 drivers I see are boy racers! Always get real annoyed when I beat them at the lights

I'm a bit confused. The 86, that's the "joint venture"? So is it more Toyota or Subaru?

And the WRX, I thought that was a version(s) of the Impreza? Or is it now its own seperate model?
(I'm not a big follower of Subaru models.)

The 86 is a Toyota. It's a joint venture with Subaru. Subaru call theirs the BRZ. But as the BRZ is a lot dearer than the base model 86, the 86 sells a lot better and thus you see more of them on the road.

In the first time of the WRX/STi history, the 2 will now not be based on the Impreza anymore. They are a standalone model now and will no longer use the name Impreza either.

I seriously don't think a 86/BRZ driver would expect to beat a XR6 Turbo. I sure as hell know I wouldn't stand a chance. I do see people do that in stuff like Camry's however. Yeah even the 4 cylinder ones.

That said, in the 86 forums I frequent, many there notice people drag at the lights when they see one, so it goes both ways. I personally wouldn't bother wasting my fuel.

As for the WRX - It'll be watered down in appearance compared to the concept, like usual:

Actually the 86 is more Subaru than Toyota. Based on a heavily modified Impreza platform, with a Subaru engine, developed primarily by Subaru and built by Subaru.

The biggest Toyota influence was money.

It puzzles me, I don't know what they expect and it's clear they're missing the point. Brainless straight line racing isn't the 86's thing, owners need to give the car the respect it deserves and take it to a mountain road instead of the highway on a Saturday night.

This.
Completely different cars...it's almost like showing a new Camry and saying "BMW 5-series sedan buyers will flock to the new Camry". Vastly different markets and target audience and very very unlikely the two will cross over one another.
Absolutely opposite philosophies behind the two cars as well...the 86 is a car built and designed with "bringing fun into driving" with a sweet chassis and adequate power, while the WRX has always been a ball-tearer, a rally car for the road.

Both great cars, in their own ways, it's just "their own ways" are a long way apart.

The 86 is the new Celica - bought mainly by the fashion concious. The 86 is a great car but overlooked by many car enthusiasts because for its lackluster (straight line) performance.

The WRX is in a completely different segment.

(My bold).

Exactly the point right there...until we change more peoples perceptions that somehow in the real world on real heavily policed roads that 0-100 and quarter mile straight line times aren't the be-all and end-all most important things about a car, the 86 will continue to be a niche model.
In a sane world (technically, the way the sports car world used to be when the Brits ruled the waves) that valued chassis dynamics and handling over outright power, it would sell gangbusters.

But in reality it's performance is lacklustre on a circuit just as much as it is in a straight line, going by its track times which are pretty dismal really. It's just a car that is good in the way it is to drive, and not in any shape or form in putting down any form of numbers.

It's an oddity really. The WRX is the opposite and can put down quite good numbers both on the strip and on a track. It would destroy an 86 in just about every area bar driver involvement and driving feel.

Bingo. That's what a "sports car" was for nearly all of motoring history. It's only in the last few decades that people have been convinced (mostly by motoring magazines) that big kilowatt figures and 0-100 and quarter mile times are all that matters.
Go back to the days of the super popular MGB with its little B-series BMC engine that piddled out a miniscule number of horsepower, and ask someone what it's quarter mile time or 0-60 time is, and they'd either laugh or look at you, puzzled. That's not the point.

Thankfully things are starting to turn and people are realising having a sports car means using what power it does have to wring the best out a great chassis and is a lot more fun in the real world.
