Question Old skool muscle car with later model EFI XR8 Windsor

How popular is this type of conversion?
I know through out the Holden community it the very popular to drop a Commodore EFI engine into a HQ or Torana, upgrading both the reliability & performance in one easy step.
Not owning one or knowing many people who own older Fords, I am interested in hearing about and seeing some Ford conversions of this type.

People do it but it's easier to make power with the early Windsors or Clevelands than the later model car so it's less of an attraction. With stroker kits and blocks available you can have any combo up to 440ci with good heads and manifolds available cheap.

Probably the only real advantage is the 4 speed auto or 5 speed manual.

Holdens are another story with the LS engines being miles ahead of the older Holden units.

When it comes to the sixties falcons up to xp this conversion is getting more popular because the later efi 5.0 litre engines are the same block configuration as the old 302 windsors and fit into the smaller engine bays of the early falcons.

When you look at the engine used in the au falcons which was stroked to 342 lots of easy power options become available to be used in these early falcons along with the easy starting and reliability of the computer controlled electronics.

My father has a Shelby Cobra, and dropped a 5 litre Windsor out of an 86 Boss Mustang, and put a 5 speed Au trans (202 BTR?) behind it, running EL GT EFI system. Its now strokered to 347 also.

A lot of the Cobra guys use similar configurations also.

When we had our XC-update Fairmont GXL with the 4.1 and C4, I always toyed with the idea of fitting a late model XR6 engine and five speed auto into it. Never got beyond doing some measuring up and ringing around wrecking yards, but it would have been nice.

Absolutely nothing wrong with mixing old and new like that. Can be an easy way to keep the old school car but underneath have modern reliable and efficient (and usually way more powerful even in standard form) mechanicals underneath it.
The hot rod guys have been doing it for many years..."resto-rods"...classic look, modern muscle underneath.

I mixed ford and gm, but it's my favorite car in my shed (and I have a few).

Old car/new engine rocks.

I found lots of useful info from the USA for their EFI Windsor conversions as there's heaps of guys over there slipping them into early mustangs etc.
That's where I got the inspiration to put EFI from an EB 5.0 onto the 289 into my XR. Plenty of people flamed me for it- saying I'd spoiled it with modern (22 year old) tech. But I love the ease of starting and smooth delivery of power.
I wasn't chasing heaps of HP, just a reliable cruiser. It was a win.

I've gone a similar path with my Camaro. Blown ls1, t56 (eng/box from vy clubby) upgraded susp, brembos from my pursuit. Can't wait til it's back on the road!

I'd love to get a 335gt running gear into a mustang

Always wanted to do a 5L EFI conversion into an XF.

That should've been the Falcon Ford introduced the EFI Windsor on, not the EB.

I had an EL 5.0 in my 66 XR about 6 years ago. Myself and a mate of mine are currently in the process of putting an AU 5.0 with a single turbo in to his 71 ZD Fairlane. Its a pretty straight forward conversion

I've just put an AU XR8 engine into my XD falcon. I think the LS conversion is more popular because you can easily get a hot rod wiring harness. One for the EFI windsor is harder to come by so it's really a custom harness you need to piece together yourself.

If you wanted to keep it simple a parts car with a 5L in it and swap the loom/modules over and try to remove what you don't need.

Or if you want to go aftermarket route for engine management, the boys over at Megasquirt forums are the masters of piecing together a kit that works using Ford OEM parts with their EMS.

I used a loom from RJM injection tech for my conversion as it was made to suit a 66ish mustang- all the connecters were pretty much identical to the XR ones and their info and instructions were great. I run it with a EECIV computer from a 93 EFI 5.0 manual mustang as I didn't want to fart around with smartsheild bypass and BTR trans controllers. I have a T5 manual hanging off the back. The fuel pump setup I purchased from BCBroncos as they do heaps of 5.0 conversions into early Broncos.
I keep my Ford all Ford!

Actually just googled RJMinjection in case anyone was considering one of their (well made) harnesses for an EFI conversion- seems they went bust and plenty of people aren't happy with not receiving products they ordered and paid for. Maybe a victim of the GFC....

Not to hijack the tread but what about a motor from a FG F6 into an XD (or maybe a Coyote if it would fit in between the shock towers) ?

Especially given that people still rave about 351 powered XD's at a time when the poor old Clevo was only producing something like 160kw...

Then again if you wanted to go mental you could fit an F6 engine into a TE Cortina...those things went hard enough and became a bit of a handful if you modded the old iron head 4.1 x-flow...I can only imagine what they would be like with a 310kw turbo six in it...

I have an old XD in the shed and now I know which motor to transplant into it (F6 )

If it was easier and you wanted to keep the same old school engine, you could do an EFI conversion on it? The best kit on the market at the moment is MSD Atomic EFI:

Its a basic throttle body injection system, ECU and 4 injectors built into the throttle body, which looks like a carby and takes the old school air filter setup, also has the ability to control timing if you want, self tunes and is set up with a basic hand controller.

Would save issues with engineering, insurance, registration, emissions regs etc.

not a bad idea
im either going stock motor and trannie biut the best bits for durability or go way out there and do a massive conversion
money and time is telling me to keep the old 200cid
not sure what i could do to it to get some decent power out of it tho
ill cross that bridge when its time to pull it out of the car
ive ran outta room in the shed :(
