Default MOTOR: Herrod XR8 Vs Walkinshaw GTS

Before reading the figures below it is worth keeping in mind the GTS was auto and the XR8 manual.
They complained about launching the XR8 and changing into 2nd while trying to contain wheelspin.
They said roll on from 60km/h in 2nd was a dead heat at 400m and beyond.

WP507 GTS 507kw auto
$95490 + $7990 = $103,480 (includes pulley, exhaust, intake & tune)
0-100km/h = 4.38
0-400m = 12.39 @189.99km/h
80-120km/h = 2.45
100-0km/h = 33.42m

Herrod XR8 500kw manual
$52490 + 27260 = $79,750 (includes engine, exhaust, brakes, suspension, wheels and tyres)
0-100km/h = 5.08
0-400m = 13.12 @185.17km/h
80-120km/h = 2.77
100-0km/h = 37.68m

Auto vs manual.

Seems fair.

Carry on....

Yeap it always then leaves the door open for these journo's to be completely care free with their articles.

$27k of mods on a XR8...really? Couldnt they just of modded the Xr8 to match the GTS stock and then compared?

Surely it wouldnt cost that much to get to that point, whats wrong the standard XR8 brakes for street use? Or the OEM suspension?

Is it a Hot Tuner article? I dont see the sense in getting a XR8 and dropping $27k. You may aswell pick up a late FG2 GT.

Been hanging out to see the results of this little duel since the video of the Herrod XR8 at heathcote appeared on FB.

A little disappointed to be honest with the result...500kw and those figures..........

Still sounds a heap better than the HSV though!!!!!!!

Surely issues with the Walkie too....don't those times match up with some of the better times achieved by the rags sorry mags for the stock GTS?

This makes me think of that engineering adage - "the law of diminishing returns".

Noting more true than modifying vehicles. Polyal is on the money, cannot see the sense my end of ever doing more than intercooler/pulley/snout/fuel pump and jets, tune, bilstein shocks and rubber.

  • Traction seemed to be an issue for the Falcon
  • Can only report on the cars they're given
  • Comparing modded cars just leaves the whole thing open for far too many commentators on either side to have their own what if scenarios
  • Imagine the Miami in the GTS

And the GTS rips the XR8 a new one! However I would have expected the XR8 to to zero to the tonne is less than 5 seconds! Clearly the chassis struggles to put all this power to the road.

Super tough putting that kind of power to the ground, especially in a manual.

What a novel idea it would be to run two auto's or two manuals. More trash designed purely for trolls to eat up...

Curious they don't seem to get how to handle wheel spin either... More gradual throttle progression would go a long way rather than just saying "oops we spun the wheels"

That's the shame with having so much power and its basically useless.
If you're gonna unleash hell, then at least make sure the package is engineered to be able to put it to the tarmac. Suspension, tyres, wheels and DSC, ABS and TC software edits to deal with it.

It's comments like that that start the flame wars that members on here get pretty tired of in threads such as this, please try not to be inflammatory.

I'd expect the GTS to take the nod. But auto vs manual is stupidity, and that 0-100 and 1/4 time for the XR8 are poor even for a stocker. Same for the Walkie, pretty much stock times? Drivers, cars, trans, surfaces, something is amiss?

(actually after thought....any tuners tested to see if the fabled 'overboost' function is present in the XR8 tune and that it is in fact identical to the GT tune? Still curious about that....engines may still just be tight but the few dynos i've read about on XR8 in internet land seemed to have read lower but that may just be the ones i've spotted)

Where is the 500kw measured at? I assume the engine? Why not spend the same on each car and then compare (assuming more money = more speed, but perhaps it means more power = more wheelspin)? I reckon the only reason they didn't use an auto XR8 is that it would just clip the manual XR8, and then presumably the GTS too.....Can't have Motor saying Ford won again.....

I think it's lack of power increase that is causing no change in terminal speeds

I'm not sure I'm following what you're saying Shonky.

The XR8 is claimed to be 500kW and the GTS is claimed to be 507kW. Even if that's not at the wheels it's an increase.

Actually you have a fairly heavily modded Miami dont you? Does 5s 0-100 and 13s quarter line up with your experience modding that package?

Regardless.. Terminal speed is way way out of kilter with that horsepower on both cars!

GTS $8k for 77 kw and expect earth shattering times... LOL

$27k for the XR8, tires only since it going in a straight line...
both cars (modded) isn't worth the coin in my opinion...

A look at the stopping times tells a big story- I'd say the XR8 has rubbish tyres compared to the GTS, based on the 6m longer stopping distance for a ~100kg lighter car.

Have you seen the size of the brakes on the gts? It would want to stop well !
