Hi, I attended Pickles salvage auction in Perth today, I was interested in this VF / Gen-F GTS with fire damaged in the cabin and back end. I thought it could have been a cool project, but it ended slightly more than I was willing to bid, so I didn't get it,
Someone got 3 wheels, 3 brakes, front suspension and repairable LSA engine, and a front bumper that still looked alright for $12.000. My idea would have been to pick up the cheapest VF base model (saw a silver one, V6 in the paper for $19.990) and transfer the drivetrain from the GTS into that. Anyway, today it wasn't me that became the auction winner, and I don't know what plans the young guy that bought it has, maybe race-car, or maybe similar plans as I had with it. Cheers |

Not a bad buy if the purchaser had a SV6 or something. Get it straight to mechanics and throw the drivetrain in.
Imagine if it was a new XR8, surely guys with XR6's would be after that motor.

$12k + Fees and transport.
LSA engines are quite cheap as crate motors.

Brake calipers are easy to dismantle and get painted or powder coated.

I am fairly certain the rest of the commodore range will not take the LSA or the GTS driveline. It had to be extensively modified to make it all fit and work.

Normally I would say not worth it, but a GENF GST is worth about 80-90K
so the car may still be worth repairing, with a 40-50K budget But: If the running gear goes into a donor car it will still only be said donor car modified, IF you put 12K of gear into a 19K car plus 10K expenses isn't going to make a 40-50K car

Is that the case? Cant see anything different between a regular vf and a hsvf apart from cosmetic touches.

The GTS has a larger diff that requires sheetmetal modification to fit, to the point where they can no longer fit a spare tyre.

Not sure how badly damaged it was, but maybe it would have made the basis for a wicked track car.

Years and years ago I bought a TX5 Telstar Ghia top of the range with all the bells and whistles from the auctions. It looked SO good and it was "only" burnt under the bonnet "a bit". Dear Lord, that car drove me to drink. Wiring looms, alternator, starter motor, wiper motor and that was just the start of it. And when I finally got it on the road the problems only got worse. They write off burnt cars for a reason and I wished they had of written that bloody TX5 off before I had laid my eyes on it..................

Yes it's that one, the black one in the background. It was less burnt on the other side; the front guard still had good paint on it. Half the drivers door still had paint on it.
The brake caliper you see in the photo is still yellow. It was only the rear left tyre that was burnt completely away, so one rim was for sure damaged. Most of the bonnet still had paint on it, (back cornes clipped off by fire crew) The front bumper still looked usable. The plastic panel in the boot was still there. I think this shell was too far gone for race-car use, but the engine will probably run again with just a new wiring harness and some new fuel rails etc. Cheers An article with |

Crazy paying 12K plus fees for that !
It'd have so much damage in the bay and an engine block ain't worth 12K |

Bit like building- renovate and extend old house or build from new.
Build from new so much easier, cheaper, certain. Be a nightmare- that drivetrain would need to be stripped and rebuilt from scratch, checking all components going in- ie time $$$ uncertainty. Wow-buyer has more $$ than sense.

I'm pretty sure All American or one of those crate engine importing mobs were selling brand new LSA crate engines last months for $12K anyway

Pretty keen to pay that much for it, those pics make it look pretty bad.
Be interesting t see close up pics of the bay. But given what a wrecker would want for vf Gts pieces there's no doubt a profit to be made, even at 12k |

http://www.pickles.com.au/damaged-sa...dan/2002592260 Must have been two because the front of this one looks in better shape that the other

That's another one.. Only half burnt. ( not 3/4 burnt as the first one).
Agree with you, the one that sold last week was a lot worse than the one just listed. Interesting to see how much more this one will go for. |
