Default Failing Hifly tyres - beware the cheap

I bought my FG XR6 2 years old from a Ford dealer in 2013. The dealer had fitted some FPV 18" wheels with cheapo tyres which I didn't like but figured they would do the job.

Just had the car up on blocks to change the coolant and noticed the inside walls of all 4 tyres are cracked. There's absolutely no way this car is safe to drive, and I was about to take the family on a long driving holiday.

Full resolution: http://merigan.tk/IMAG0389.jpg

The tyres are Hifly HF805 Challenger. They were manufactured in April 2012.
Wear is very even and at about 75%. They looked fine when the car was serviced a year ago. Outside walls are fine.

So to the Ford community I'm putting it out there that if you buy cheap tyres - keep an eye on them!

You need to inform a motoring group like RAC, NRMA etc or Facebook it and get the word out

You are lucky to notice the faults before you went away, never heard of Hyfly tyres, thanks for the heads up.

Cheers

There are quite a number of no name Chinese brands out there, I never expect much performance out of them, but I don't expect that, and all 4???. Keep in mind it is not unheard of for a good brand to fail

God damn!!! That is just appalling and the very reason why these cheap and nasty tyres should be banned.

I have seen this brand before, mostly brand new on used cars on the lot at some of my local car yards.

I rather take my chances on a bare steel rim than run on those things. That's an accident/lawsuit waiting to happen.

More reason to steer clear of no name tyres, they're cheap for a reason.

That's the reason why I'll only ever run genuine Michelins on my car, even though the tyres guys try and con me into their own brand junk

I had the same thing happen to me but with a well known brand of tyres, a tyre shop told me it is caused by not running enough pressure, the lower the profile the more pressure you need.

Hifly - seems an appropriate brand name.

I would go feral with the dealer and tire shop if you can find them...

You get what you pay for!

Chinese-engineered, Chinese-made tyres are pretty much all crap. In today's day and age, when you can get branded rubber for half the cost of what they used to cost 5 years ago, and mid-range tyres are more than affordable, why the hell would you get this cheap crap?

Ah, that's right - they're cheap! You may as well sell your Ford and buy a Chery.

Sorry if I offend...

Most of those cheap brands last about 2 years. They're ok if you are aware of it.

who remembers the tyres branded as "clear".. it was like driving on ice even in the dry. I bought a car with them on years ago and in the wet they were just impossible to drive with. I had my car spinning in the wet slightly uphill under slight throttle in 6th gear at 110km/h.

makes those hifly tyres seem premium.

Even some name brand tyres are poo as well.

I've had Toyo TEO PLUS and they are a junk tyre, they're alright for about 10,000km but by the time they get to 80% tread left you can spin them up without even trying.

Had them fitted to my Focus, crap tyre, could get it to spin in first which is torque limited with less than half throttle.

Moral of the story, don't fit cheap crap to your cars regardless of brand name, ditched the Toyo's for Continental ContiSportContact 2s and haven't looked back since.

The brand name Hifly is a pretty accurate assessment of Chinese marketing of what will happen to you at 100km/h when they fail.

This happens to all brands of tyres. The reason it happens is that the tyre is not running the correct pressure. If it happened to all 4 tyres then you need to increase the pressure in your tyres because it will happen to a new seat if you run the same pressure.

All tyres sold in Australia need to comply with Australian standards, cheap or expensive.

Had this happen to brand name and non brand name tyres also some that get bulges in the sidewall. It pays to check your tyres regularly even if there super doper expensive ones.

So does frozen food imported into the country, and so does electical wiring and so do cars.
Yet that did not stop berries being contaminated with hepatitis or thousands of metres of 240v wiring needing to be recalled (and pulled out of homes where it was installed) and cars imported here with asbestos gaskets.

Hifly tyres dont appear to be sold in the US which might tell you something.

It's one thing to buy a medium range tyre with average grip, you can at least take it real easy till you can afford better ones. But when a tyre fails with side wall cracking and it's relying on the inner casing to support the car, then it is literally a blowout/rollover situation waiting to happen. I would prefer to get 75% worn second hand brand named tyres fitted for the interim to last me till I can afford new decent quality middle range tyres.

looks like under inflation, i run 42psi cold in my 235/40r18's the placard says 28psi for that size tyre but thats way too low
i had a similar crack on a bridgestone from driving 500m on a flat tyre at about 5km/h

Im running 37psi minimum in my 225/40r18 myself. Tyre place says not to run higher but the bulge in the side wall looks too much for my liking. I may even consider running 1 or 2 lbs more at the sacrifice of ride quality.
