Post Toyota "Thank you Ford for advertising our cars"

'Ford's decision to use Toyota in its "comparative" advertisements has been labelled "fantastic" by Toyota's Australian chief.

David Buttner, who heads up the Japanese brand's local arm, has no problem with Ford's decision to favourably compare its cars to Toyotas in its marketing and press materials.

"I think it's fantastic they are prepared to use our vehicles in their advertisements," Buttner told Drive.

So far Ford has run national television campaigns that highlight the advantages of the Ford Kuga over the similar Toyota RAV4 and the Ford Ranger against the market-leading Toyota HiLux ute.

But Buttner was unconcerned by his vehicles being portrayed in such a manner by a rival brand.

"Every company chooses to promote and advertise their company in they way see fit," Buttner said.

"That will continue in the future. We have a great product line-up and we're proud of it. It's been very successful in the marketplace and we'll keep growing it to make sure it's successful in the future."

Ford Australia's recently installed boss Graeme Whickman defended the campaign and strongly opposed the characterisation of them as 'attack ads'.

"The reason I dislike [the word attack] is because any decent human being or any decent brand doesn't start out by chest-beating," Whickman said recently.

And don't expect Toyota to hit back with comparative ads of its own.

"It's never been something we've employed, but each to their own," Buttner said."

Always thought those comparative ford vs toyota ads were rather lame.. Aren't ford in a way violating a trademark by featuring another brand's logo and badge in their own ad, without prior written permission? Isn't that the reason why car wash detergents with a BA Xr6 on the label, always showed one with the Ford badge removed..

Ford need to reassess their advertising. I don't like the direction they are taking, the comparisons are not the way to go, if they want to stick to them then find another way to communicate them.
I'd rather they focus more on their products than trying to compare to others.
A good example is the Hyundai Sonata commercial, the guy has a new car but has a broken leg so has his neighbour drive it. The neighbour enjoys it so much that even after the owner has recovered, doesn't want to give up the drive.
It is a more positive advertisement. Ford haven't done a decent ad in years.
Car journos do a better job (constantly labeling Focus and Fiesta as dynamic bench marks).
Ford should encompass the racing history of the company, "The Rally Bred Fiesta," kind of like that racing has brought about a better product (i.e Audi).

Agree, rubbishing the opposition in sales is poor tactics.
even if what they say is true

If they sell more Toyota's and Ford is BETTER, then Ford need to understand why?

If they're going to do it, may as well do it properly.

A video of a Ranger and Hilux side by side each pulling a 2T boat uphill would do it for me.

Haven't Ford got record low sales this year while running these ads?

I don't get it, the Ranger was getting such a good reputation amongst traditional ute buyers, but now the Ranger seems like a bit of a joke with these ads.

The worst one was the Kuga ad with the Ford marketing woman overtaking a 4 cylinder Rav4 and all hipster press and journalists saying "really?" when told it has more power than a Rav4 -because the Rav4 is known as a real powerhouse....

Although I do think the girl in blue in the dealer showroom ads is stunning though

They might want to look at pricing as well. One look around the roads shows they're being slaughtered by the Triton in particular and you even see more of those Chinese utes than Rangers. Shame, because even though we own and love a Triton, we really liked the looks of the Ranger, especially the XLT versions.

Literally the only thing that kept us out of a Ranger was the eye-watering price of a diesel automatic twin cab with a canopy...fifty bloody grand plus? Please...

Don't know where you are but in Melbourne & country areas I see more Rangers than those **** box Tritons on the roads & certainly bugger all towing vans lol

PS: There is a reason for the price difference of Ranger & Triton in which I was happy to pay more.

Different up here. See plenty of Tritons hauling big vans, but as for just family vehicles, you simply don't see the Ranger in big numbers...certainly way outnumbered by Tritons and Hiluxes. Shame really as the Ranger is a good vehicle...just way overpriced. Seeing as how they're all screwed together in Thailand or where ever in Asia there should be no real reason for such a big price differential.

2011G6E. One of the reason for Fiesta Focus Ranger etc being built in Thailand was to bring price down , hasn't happened. All Fords should be cheaper than they are,

No. It is not an infringement of trade mark to use another trade mark for the purpose of comparative advertising.

Car wash detergent ads are different - they're clearly not using the Falcon for comparative purposes. One of the reason why car wash ads (etc) doesn't show badges on cars is because they could arguably be liable for passing off and/or misleading and deceptive conduct because it suggests that Ford are endorsing the product they're selling.

O/T ..

Except they are not utes as they are not based off passenger CAR platforms.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ute_%28vehicle%29

I always call my wifes Triton a truck to correctly differentiate it from the real XR6 ute sitting next to it in the carport.

I remember when Holden invented RTS (or something like that) and showed how well their cars went around witches hats while Cortinas and Falcons ploughed through all over the place.

Ford responded with a Falcon driving not around witches hats but Ford racing drivers

While all cars look the same and drive the same, the deciding factor for one over the other comes down to whether it has overhead grab handles, or alloy wheels or sat nav. Comparative advertising is a valid sales tool in todays market.
Or you could be Mitsi selling triton at chinese prices, that's one way of getting volume......

That's because the only way they can sell the Triton is to rip the guts out of the price, because they are so far behind the competition. The all new Triton still can't even match the Ranger.

The sales data doesn't back up what you are saying. Ranger is the only model in the Ford range doing very well. Ranger is 2nd in the market place & ahead of Triton & all those Chinese utes.

Pulling big vans my *** with only 2.5 ton towing capacity compared to the Rangers 3.5 ton

The Ranger is a good vehicle as it will outclass the Triton any day, can't see your logic saying ranger is overpriced, go check prices for Toyata, Isuzu, Holden VW then do your comparisons of vehicles specs then you will see why the Ranger is a good seller, imo ranger exceeded my expectations.

Plenty of rangers out there!

If you care to read the Ford Ranger brochure you will see it is marketed as a Truck not a bloody ute.

Cheers.

A customer of mine is ditching his PX Ranger with the 3.2L I5 for a RAM 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins 6BT, just chucked down $20K deposit on one.

He tows a 5th wheeler caravan, around the 3000KG mark.

Just because something is rated to tow "3500KG" doesn't mean its going to do it well.

When you start pulling something that weighs circa 3000KG with the aerodynamics of an apartment building, 470NM will do it but it probably doesn't cut the mustard.

People say the Ranger/Colorado/Amarok are good, are they "good" or are they just the glitter on the pile of turds the whole group is vs the real deal like F series, RAM and Silverado/Sierra?

You are correct when you have to consider the combine weight of the tow vehicle & van which a lot of people over look, yes I would love to own a Dodge Ram but unfortunately it well & truly out of my affordability price range atm but then again I'm not towing a heavy van.

Of course affordibility is a pain in the ***, but Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge has been in talks with their parent company and put forward a business case for the new Dodge RAM 1500 to be designed and built in RHD at the factory for our market.

I know the 1500 is the light duty model, but say if it was priced at $70K in our market, would you weigh up that extra $20,000 or so over the smaller dual cab utes?

Or a hypothetical situation, we go back a few years, Ford decides, instead of spending $X on designing the PX Ranger, they run with the same old previous model for a few more years.

BUT

The aluminium F150 which has just come out in the USA has been designed in RHD, and we're getting it in our market, with the 2.7L and 3.5L Ecoboost engines, at around $60,000.

Given that its more affordable, would you still go Ranger then?

People say "there is no market here" for these things, how do you know when you haven't offered it?

The only chance we had was some hodge podge F250/350 which was the USA 1999 model which ran from 2001-2006 with minor changes along the way, built in Brazil, it didn't even have a glove box.

I see heaps of Rangers on the road around here.
See a few Great Walls, but hardly any of the other Chinese utes.

My mate is a diehard Hilux fanboy and gets angry when he sees the Ranger ads. He says it's bull**** that a Ranger can tow 1t more than a Hilux.

That is the problem with marketing of vehicles, certain models are omitted in some countries, think this is done to protect other models sales.

F150 aluminium in RHD? Where do I sign? This would be so much better than the 3rd world utes we have to choose from, which sadly Ranger is one of.
