''The 2016 WN Holden Caprice V — official details on which we expect to be revealed around September — looks set to sport a series of significant updates and an uprated V8 engine to see it through to the end of production in late 2017.
Furthermore, information received this week by CarAdvice means we can exclusively reveal that Holden looks set to drop the LPG-fuelled V6 engine option as part of the wider cost-cutting measures we revealed recently, and will run with a single V8 engine and single six-speed automatic gearbox option. The current L98 6.0-litre V8 engine that produces 260kW of power and 517Nm of torque will be replaced by a 6.2-litre V8 engine with codename L99 (an upgraded version of the LS3 current used in the naturally aspirated HSV range). This engine will locally produce 304kW of power at 5900rpm, down on the same engine used in the Chevrolet SS, in which it produces 310kW of power. Additionally, the L99 engine also comes with camshaft phasing technology, which is the simplest form of variable valve timing, whereby the angle of the camshaft is rotated backwards and forwards relative to the crankshaft. Our information suggests that the facelift changes and new engine will reduce weight by 2kg in total. This, in addition to the fuel-saving technology of the L99 engine, is likely to reduce fuel consumption from the current 11.7l/100km and increase performance, given the addition of 44kW of power. The WN Caprice V design has remained largely unchanged since the car was launched in 2006, though it received a very minor exterior facelift alongside a brand new interior in 2013 alongside the launch of the VF Commodore. The Caprice’s only current rival in VFACTS’ Upper Large segment is the just-updated Chrysler 300. The Holden commands more than 55.5 per cent market share. With 614 sales this year, the Caprice has also more than doubled the Hyundai Genesis (282). The full degree of the facelift is currently unknown and there’s no official confirmation, but our sources suggest that it will be greater than what see on the revised VF Commodore, which is expected to only receive minor styling changes to the front-end. The facelifted Caprice V is expected to be released mid-September alongside said Series 2 VF Commodore. Holden refused to provide any comment, but has previously commented that it will continue to keep Commodore relevant until its planned end of production in 2017. Surprised they are still selling LWB models. Even the old Fairlane was selling more than that when it got axed.

Sales are up 10% this year. Being 9 years old and costing 60k probably pretty profitable considering it's mostly Commodore bits and pieces. Don't sell many around 1400 a year.

They export alot of caprice though. US Police and China get it, as well the UAE. This is probably more the reason why its getting an update.
Ive always liked the caprice. Its a good car to drive with the LWB / 6.0 combo.

In the latest Wheels edition on pages 28, there's an in coming section and under October 2015 onwards there is a falcon update, not sure if this is really happening, but maybe with the limited editions sprints due around that time

VF SS range is getting the same engine as well as minor face lift and interior updates.
Apparently the 304kw if for the auto with AFM and the manual will have a higher output. No mention of torque figures.

It's an LS3 but detuned, 0.3 less compression and has the AFM junk which is a shame because it's more money and time to remove it when fitting a cam. Glad they've announced this though as I was speculating on a new ute if either Ford or Holden was getting an engine upgrade.

The run of the mill V8 Camaro comes with two engine options depending on the transmission.
The L99 6.2L with AFM is only fitted to the automatic version - 400hp - 410lb-ft (300kW) The LS3 6.2L is mated to the 6 speed manual - 426hp - 420lb-ft (318kW) The above are the US engine outputs. The L99 is nearly identical to the LS3 with the exception it has Active Fuel Management and Variable Valve Timing. Holden owners with AFM engines have been doing cam swaps without any problems for a number of years. There are a lot of cam profiles available and it costs a little more than the non-AFM because most owners chose to delete the AFM and therefore need to swap out the valvetrain. Those who want to save money keep the AFM and use VVT camshafts of which there are also plenty available. I wouldn't take much notice of the media reports until Holden confirms what engine configurations will be available. History shows AFM only for autos which is why the Statesman will probably end up with the L99. The manual SS commodores may end up with the LS3. |

No exactly the same but with AFM, dropped comp and less hp. You remove the AFM and fit a regular grind cam. It's basically new lifters, head gasket, chain dampener and valley cover.

Don't knock the Chev engine, its more compact than many 4 cylinders. Nice and light. the compact size means you can mount the engine low and back.

Along with pushrods and valve springs,been there done that. What a shame they are going to bugger what is considered the best LS series mainstream engine by putting the afm garbage into it.the afm lifter they use is a very crude spring on top of lifter,locking pin set up well known for turning sideways and doing damage.your nuts if you leave them in when doing a cam swap which by the way if your paying someone is about 3g to 4g including a tune.
