Episode 7 of the Shannons Legends of Motorsport is on this weekend on 7Mate on Saturday 7th November @ 2:00pm (All States)
This week is a 1 hour special on the 1973 Hardie Ferodo 1000 won by Allan Moffat and Ian Geoghegan in an XA Falcon GT Hardtop where the XA’s, LJ’s & R/T E49’s were fighting it out. Just a heads-up for anyone interested in watching or recording it. |

Thanks for the heads up. One of my fav races. In some respects a shame thst Goss was taken out and robbed of a victory after pioneering the hardtop in race trim. Still great that Moffat came through. Loved Moffat's victory speech and the way he named and thanked his sponsors.

Often uncredited but it was one of Pete Geoghegan's finest drives at Bathurst. He got the car back in the lead and in a good position when it went a lap down early after Moff spun at Castrol and subsequently pitted to change tyres and driver. He was also suffering from severe cramps in the right arm. The car also had a engine misfire and was running on 7 cylinders at race finish. Although Goss had it in the bag until his accident.....

Interesting program and revealed some info that I was unaware of. Somewhat amazing that it was Howard Marsden who apparently panicked at the threat of a Holden V8 and prompted the closure of the factory team. Loved the Pete Geogehan gearbox recount by Moffat. I was however surprised that they didn't cover the crash incident that saw the Goss car taken out of the race from a winning position. Very much enjoyed the colour video of those falcon hardtops in the first lap as they powered away. Well worth a look.
On a separate thing; a pity there is no video of that Easter Bathurst race between Moffat (mustang) and Geoghegan (super falcon), That would make a good Shannon's legends story. |
