I'm in the market for either a Mondeo XR5, or something in the MC series.
Does anyone know why Ford stopped making the XR5 at the MB series? Seems like a decent car with reasonable credentials to have kept it going? |

Maybe access to the Volvo 5cyl engine plus development of their own ecoboost range.

Yeah could be right there...seems like the ecoboost engine is on similar spec's to the Volvo, and perhaps better fuel economy.

^^this is all correct. Focus xr5 was in producing from '06-'10 and the Mondeo from '07-10. Then there was a hiatus till '12 for the Focus ST while the Mondeo carried on with 2 more models before the current new model was released after delays of over 12 months. There is a rumour of a Sports or ST model, but somehow I doubt it will happen.
I'd love a Mondeo xr5 again, but would go for a MB instead of a MA. Sent while boosting ....

Should have kept the Volvo 5 Cylinder IMO. I like my ecoboost but preferred the old engine.

I've had all 3. Firstly a Mondeo (and XR6 ute) then a Focus alongside the Mondeo. Mondie was constantly 9.5l/100 under my control and Focus around 10.5 under the wife. But also there is differences in gearbox and fuel maps between the 2. The Focus is more sporty naturally.
As for the ST, mine was heavily modified just short of turbo swap and I gave it heaps and was still sitting on about 9-9.1l/100! The Ecoboost is an amazing engine, smaller, more economical and more power! Sent while boosting ....

There are not many XR5's in the second hand market going (MB). The ones that are available, are lowish KM's - probably in well looked after condition.

I think we (XR5 Turbo forum) worked out there are less Mondeo XR5's than Focus RS in Aus (315).

Not many MC Ecoboost Titanium's either in the used market. More TDCI's of course.

The TDCi is very popular in NZ with companies using them for reps etc. With diesel being under 90c/ltr and Road User Charges (tax) adding under 5c/ltr it's very cheap considering petrol is still around $1:60/ltr for 91

The Mondeo XR5 wasn't a rebadged ST like the Focus, when the Volvo motor got replaced with EcoBoost engines they integrated it into the regular models

In the UK/Europe the Mondeo was badged "Titanium Sport" and it and the Focus were only called XR5 Turbo in Aus and NZ to "align" with earlier Fiesta XR4 (ST everywhere else) and Falcon XR6, XR6T and XR8. Previous Mondeo's still had ST variants.

My mrs XR5 turbo Mondy is great. Have been thinking of upgrading her into an everest due to where we are thinking of moving to but if it we stay ill keep it, can't fault it. Plenty of power and great on fuel. IMO the xr5's are an awesome bit of kit.

My wife has an MB XR5 Mondeo and she absolutely loves it. I expected that being a manual only would be a deal breaker but she prefers it as it adds to the sporty nature of the car. Most of the standard features at the time are only now starting to come on some of the other main stream cars e.g. Radar controlled cruise.
We went with the MB because the sunroof was standard and the red stitching on the seats and steering wheel set it apart. It's a great car and would thoroughly recommend. I only wish a new Sports or ST version is in the pipeline and coming to Australia. |
