Default Ford Maverick ?

I have been looking for that XR8 Falcon Ute, and widen a few searches for Australian Vehicles that I wanted to get a look at. Came across the Nissan powered Ford Maverick. I see quite a few of them for sale, but wanted to get impressions of them in general from the people that are in the know. It might speak volumes that there are not any "Maverick" links on the site

The Maverick is a rebadged Nissan Patrol.Everthing is Nissan except the badging.Pretty good vehicle, came with either 3.0 litre bullet proof petrol engine or a 4.2 litre 6 cyl non turbo diesel.

I don't think the Maverick came out with the gutless 3.0 litre engine buddy.

The 3.0 litre may have been okay in a lightweight car but it was not
big enough or powerful enough for the Patrol, especially if you wanted to tow anything
making it a short lived, very unpopular engined model in the Nissan Patrol range.

The Ford Maverick came out only with 4.2 litre Petrol or 4.2 litre N/A Diesel engines AFAIK.

The Maverick was a good strong 4WD in it's day but they are, like the old Patrols, pretty prone to rusting badly.

Matbe I'm wrong about the 3 litre petrol engine in the Maverick but the Patrol definately had the 3 litre Skyline/VL Commodore engine option.I thought the 4.2 petrol finished with the previous model, but then again I'm old and going slightly senile,so who knows.

Yep we had a Ford Maverick petrol back in the day. I think the colour scheme of the Maverick looked way better than the bland equivalent patrol.

shocking fuel consumption especially on wide desert duellers but remedied somewhat by LPG conversion which was pretty good as the tank fitted under the rear of the car.

Wouldn't exactly say it was the most reliable car, auto trans would often get too hot on long highway runs and it cracked its head at 220k km - but could of been unique to that vehicle

Yes they optioned some Nissan Patrols with the 3.0 litre engine but most of the Patrols sold in Australia had the 4.2 litre petrol or diesel engines.

It was called the "RB30".

The "RB30" was quite a few thousands of dollars cheaper to buy than the other larger engined models.
It was never a popular option, as the 3.0 litre Skyline engine was small & did not make
much torque at low revs. (It needed quite a few revs to make any power.)

It was not much good for moving a large heavy vehicle, fully loaded with 8 passengers, especially towing anything heavy.

They were only just okay when they were empty & not towing.

It's a rebadged GQ Patrol. Bulletproof cars if you can find one without rust. They are still fetching really good money for good condition ones. Hard to find good ones that havn't been flogged. I sold mine a couple of years ago with zero rust and it was heavily modified. Completely bulletproof, i didn't have a single issue with mine breaking anything and it got worked very hard offroad. The Maverick only came out with the TB42 and 4.2 diesel. Mine even had auto up and down windows, not bad for a 25 year old car.

Yeah, they had plenty of problems with the automatic transmissions in the Maverick & Patrols back then
& they were very expensive to repair.

Manuals were just about mechanically bullet proof.

Noisy, rattly, slow, thirsty, and rough as guts, but they will go till the end of time and you won't break them unless you're trying very hard.

Been 4WDing with mates back in the day ... and he has a 2-tone black/grey Shortie with the 4.2L petrol ... on LPG as well.

Wasn't to drive on the road either. Done a few Syd-Bris trips in it.

I owned a 4.2 litre diesel version for near on 19 years, best goddam car I ever owned, and still one of the best all round four wheel drives around.

You can get parts everywhere for them.

For all intents and purposes they are a Nissan Patrol GQ

The Nissan / Ford partnership finished many many years ago which is why you won't find a link to them here.

Nissan would have to be the only car maker who has been in bed with both team blue and team red:

- VL Commodore / R31 Skyline (RB30 engine)
- Holden Astra/Nissan Pulsar
- Holden Vector/Nissan Pulsar Sedan
- Ford XF Ute/Nissan XF-N Ute
- Ford Maverick/Nissan Patrol
- Ford Corsair/Nissan Pintara

The Nissan XF-N ute ran the mighty 4.1 crossflow though. Guess Nissan know a good thing when they see it.

There you go ... so it was ... only Australia though.

The CA16DE and CA18DE would have been a much better engine to use though.

The nissan donk would have been better I agree. My wife had an n13 from 2005 to 2011 and after the stretched throttle and kick down cables were changed, it was slow, but not bad mechanically.

Are you using the term 'true 4x4' based around the solid front axle, lockable diffs and genuine transfer case? If that's the case then the 75 (I think) cruiser is the last of the breed.

That and the Jeep Wrangler, now that the Defender is gone.
And the G-wagen, if you have deep pockets.

The GQ with the Skyline 6 & 5spd was extremely popular at the time, as they were massively cheaper than the full-size model.
They mostly went to the mums who only ever used them around town.
I doubt many survived till now. Possibly some would be re-engined.

It was essentially a rebadged Nissan Terrano II.
