Sister is shopping for family hack in $10-$15k range - is looking at some 2010-2012 Skoda Octavias.

I know Skoda driveline is Volkswagon - have read VAG DSG issues were with the 7-speeds, and 6-speed DSGs are meant to be fine. Sound right?

Any other known issues? She has no preference between petrol and diesel.

Go the Petrol models ... have seen the TDi's suffer from runaway diesel syndrome ..... and in an auto. If it happens .... say Goodbye to the engine if you can't starve if from air ... and turning the key off does nothing.

Great cars IMHO and I did a fair bit of research on these too. In particular the VRS Wagons as they look so cool

As above, I'd stick to the petrol models (preferably 2.0l turbo in the VRS) which should only have the 6-speed (wet clutch) DSG or just get a manual. The 6spd DSG is reasonably bullet-proof but make sure the major services are up to date (every 60k kms and it's expensive so some owners may skip it and hope for the best).

The 7 spd DSG with the dry clutch (found in some of the less powerful VAG models) is the one that got the bad reputation.

Other than that I've found these VAG cars can be a bit happy to trigger the 'check engine light' but most of the time it's nothing to worry about.

SWMBO has the same 2.0 TSI - 6 spd DSG in her VW EOS.
I've been happy with that and we've had it since 2012 (2009 model)

AVOID the 2.0 litre motor !
Known to have injector issues = hole in piston !!!!
Had an Octavia with the 7spd DSG (2008 maybe....)
Great car otherwise...

Great economy, handling, but finish after a few years was ordinary (fabric peeling off door skins, air vent fins failing due to UV)

Our 2014 Superb still looks as good as the day it was driven home, nothing fading or falling off. Six speed DSG working fine, but it's a county car.
Every thing in Skodies has come from Audi and VW, they just change the badges.
Get the latest year model you can with full service history.

It is a VAG car - some love them and some hate them . DSG can have issues and petrols can burn a bit of oil . Depreciation is high if you buy new and used they can be a bit of a hit and miss reliability wise. They drive and handle pretty good for what they are . VW watercooled and briskoda are good source of info.
