Default Q: Kia Diesel Interchanges

Got an 04 Pregio van that’s almost too good to weigh in. Needs shackle bushes, a friction disc and a screen. Nil rust, 300-odd K of mostly freeway use.

Oh, and no engine. That went into a K2700 truck.

I can’t find a motor at sane prices, or at least a crank and maybe a rod. (Crank is cracked, rod damaged where its bearing spun). Crank doesn’t interchange with the smaller Mazda diesels I believe inspired the J2 motor.

Without being silly, any suggestions of motors that either bolt up to the J2 pattern bellhousings or a readily adapted swap? The aim would be to keep it tractable and suited to design function.

Cheers for any thoughts on how this might be achieved practically and thriftily.

It's a long shot but you might try Dellows in Revesby, they've been making bellhousings for all types of conversions for years.

That would be a fallback position, I’m hoping to hear there is a coincidental Asian diesel swap, eg a Hino crank drops into the Kia block or a Dyna motor bolts straight up.

Have a blighted 4M40 to hand (bored and new slugs but oil pressure issues), an FG Barra (way too big), had considered an Ecotec swap but still a lot of hassle.

2nd hand engines seem to demand ridiculous prices here.
it was a long time ago but I knew a place in Otahuhu, Auckland where you could get a used Jap engine for $150-500.
surely you could get one send from Asia for SFA with a bit of digging try Alibaba

Some of the bigger Kia Asia used (and still do) the Mazda T3500 3.5 SL diesel same as the Ford Trader 0409.
Some even used the later Mazda T4000 TM 4.0. That should get it going down the superslab.

The T3500 bellhousing bolt pattern looks very similar!

A few of the new Kia have 3.8 as well.
I found I could buy new parts for my diesels from Perkins, Mazda, Ford, and Kia.
3.5SL is basically a Perkins made under licence by Mazda. So look at those bellhousing's also

Wreckers in Berkeley Vale (might have moved to Tuggerah now) Japtrucks, not to be confused with the one in Qld.

That 4 litre Mazda motor was a kia motor the parts were interchangeable I think so the 3.5litre would be the same bell housing pattern.

That T3500/4000 is a pretty big lump of an engine. I doubt it would fit in the engine bay of the Pregio, but I guess anything's possible.

Fair call. I will need to find some nose-to-bellhousing flange measurements for comparison. There's a little bounce in the height available.

Yes. I’m aware of the potential issues with permissibility of some swaps and have no intention of putting anything on the road that is not “...suitable for subsequent resale to a person of average driving ability” as the code says in multiple places.

Mate I just happen to have an old T3500 bus sitting down in my shed. Would you like me to try and get some approximate measurements for you over the weekend?

If it doesn’t risk a blue with the resident wildlife (snakes, spiders whatever) and won’t injure you - yes please. Ideal things to know are harmonic front or crank nose to machined mating face at rear of block, approx width between motor mount pad spotfacings, crank CL to top of rocker cover.

Bevsta - the question is more how much might a durable and simple diesel van cost a pensioner who does the odd lawn or gardening job. Hiaces etc are going to be dearer for equivalent condition.

Just measured the 3.5SL in the 0409.

And what I remember in sizing up a Cummins 4BT about the same size. Ask me why I know this.

CL crankshaft front of timing cover to machined face at bellhousing 530mm

CL crankshaft (bottom of block) to top of air breather pipe outlet 480mm

centre to centre engine mounts surfaces 450mm

engine overall including fan from bellhousing face 700mm

my diesels harmonic balancer excepts double pulley belts depth of 70mm

As others have said its a large lump of engine.

Have you contacted SMS diesel parts of Lidcombe or Engines Australia who stock Perkins/Mazda diesels.

…Two years later, here we are and it’s Stuffed Diesel Time again. I think a Stihl battery hedger might be slightly more durable.

I am at the point where I think a transplant of something everyday and petrol, would be smarter. Seemingly, my mate is not dedicated to looking after a diesel and my part time colleague not keen on fixing this one properly.

What about an Ecotec swap?

It’s not a Preggo, that was the last donor. Then he cracked the head on that motor twelve months ago, so the head from the cracked crank motor went on. It’s getting silly, patching up the same driveline every year.
