A lot of money for a really average motor car.

What price do you put on it? Would "X-100" be worth more at auction?

This is a crossover artefact; part pop-art, part heirloom.

It's the echo of a memorable "performance" - the film chase scenes - just as Blue Poles is partly the echo of Jackson Pollock squirting paint into the air, and walking drunkenly, barefoot, through broken glass on the huge canvas he'd laid on his studio floor during a bender.

I personally think it grossly undersold, if provenance stacks up.

Anything Steve McQueen is highly collectable, the Bullitt Mustang would be near the top of the must have list for a serious collector with the coin.......or how about US$60,000 for a pair of sunnies......

In 2006 McQueen's widow Barbara Minty-McQueen put several of The Great Escape star's motorbikes and items of memorabilia up for auction, including tinted sunglasses he wore in The Thomas Crown Affair, which sold for $US60,000.

That's great value if you consider a banana taped to a wall went for $120K US. Bargain even.

It's one of the most famous movie cars of all time.

And it's value is also in it's original state. Restoring this car kills it's value.

Considering a Rolex owned by Paul Newman sold for 17 mill last year, 5 mill for an iconic car is good value.
Have you ever seen Paul Newmans watch?
No me neither, but everyone knows the Mustang from Bullitt.

I just hope some Arab Sheik or a Rapper didn't buy it.
Hopefully someone like Jay Leno or Tim Allen.

That Rick Harrison from Pawn Stars is a freak for anything Steve McQueen. But he was probably too busy calling one of his buddies and missed the auction.

I did hear someone say they thought it was purchased by the peterson automotive museum, or someone of that ilk. Hopefully so, cause it will be preserved as a part of american auto history.
